This is a must read for any Christian! This book needs to be digested in parts and reflected upon daily. It's been a book I go to time and time again to reflect on the words of our savior and lord, Jesus Christ. It's actually quite amazing how much Jesus taught us through the gospel accounts recorded by Mathew Mark Luke and John. But I was even more surprised when you take JUST the words of Jesus, and compiled them together, how much there actually was of his actual WORDS in the gospels.Getting the chance to remove the narrative and explanative from the bible, and only read the actual words is a very refreshing perspective. I'm glad Phyllis Tickle took on this project and compiled those words together in this FANTASTIC book!

This book has been really enjoyable to read on a daily basis. I have never been one to regularly just pick up the bible and read it. Most often I find that when I pickup the bible and start reading, the section that I randomly pick doesn't have any relavance to anything that is currently going on in my life. Alternatively, I find that every single time I pick up this book and start reading the words of Jesus, it is always relevant and encouraging.

Excellent book. Not for the faint of heart or those who are not more serious about deepening their relationship with God. It requires some degree of outside reading in order to derive the full benefit of the book. If in a group, it is important that everyone feel comfortable in expressing thoughts and feelings regarding the particular portion of scripture being discussed. It is really important to read the author's "Reflections on the Words of Jesus" in the beginning of the book as well as "A Reader's Guide" in the back of the book --BEFORE -- attempting to jump into the actual text itself. Anyone serious about deepening their relationship with God will find the book/exercise very rewarding. It clearly requires comfort in exploring and challenging your faith and asking the Holy Spirit to speak to you and guide you. There should be no expectation that everyone will "arrive" at the same place, at the same time. Let the Holy Spirit work within you as there is no "answer key" to any of the meanings.

I had to scour a bit to locate the source novel that the amazing film was based on - but it was worth every penny. Just an astounding conversion of the book into the film's screenplay - incredible.Having recently reviewed the fantasy film 'City Of Ember', it was disheartening to discover the frothing rabid mob of fans who decry and crucify the film version due primarily to their adolescent view that movies 'must' be exactly like the novel it's based on and not judging the movie on its own merits. It was therefore a much needed and very pleasant surprise at the 'Rare Birds' adaptation with William Hurt, Molly Parker and Andy Jones.Riche's words (nearly verbatim), inflection, moods, mannerisms, and overall character depth can all be found in the film.Apologies for going on about the celluloid since this review is supposed to be about the novel. But you'll find that one is perfectly compliments the other - hilarious and richly fantastic.I will say that as much as the filmmakers were able to put into the movie adaptation - the novel gives you so much more. In order to pare down the number of characters and sharpen the story, many of the motivations and interwoven history is not delved into or discussed. Missing most prominently is Dave's so-called best friend and their relationship as it revolves around the swinging fortunes of The Auk, the wheelchair-bound 'world's leading ornithologist' Dr. Hans Speidel, and his fragmenting marriage to his cable-show-talking-head of a wife.The novel also ends somewhat differently than the film - as Dave is seen as triumphant and reborn in the movie. No spoilers, but he's infinitely more somber and reflective about the year within which the events Rare Birds takes place. (in the film it's compressed into a month or so)If you're a fan of the film, as I was introduced to Dave & Co, you'll be so much more satisfied with the novel. My soul ached for "more" when the movie ends and the novel helped fill the void. Conversely, if you read the novel, please check out the film - it adds a visual richness that the novel, no matter how well written, cannot capture; especially when seen thru the stunning radiance that is Molly Parker and the stark pale beauty of the Newfoundland coast.

I enjoyed this read, partly because I am a birder and partly because it's a fun read about different types of people and how they respond to their world. The ending is a smash hit in my view.

Read the book, but especially see the movie. This is what a story should be. It's just a fun story that's enjoyable. Remember, always have a plan B.

I was born and raised in Newfoundland, but moved away a few years ago. This book brought back the punch of Newfoundland humor in such a way that it left me laughing out loud like a lunatic til tears were running down my cheeks. I always thought that the Newfoundland sense of humor was something that couldn't be put into words...something you had to experience first hand, and even then sometimes people don't get it. Somehow this author has pulled it off. I haven't seen the movie yet, but I'm greatly looking forward to it. Bravo Edward Riche!!!

Excellent book, even better than the movie, though the movie is excellent too. If you want to read a laugh out loud book this summer, this is the one!

The title is deceptive in that it is nowhere near informing anyone of the price of watches for the year of 2017 as stated. It is a book that is very informative as to the history or watches, especially railroad watches and their history and certain watch companies, some that are out of business now but as a source for pricing information. As far as pricing information of today's watches it fails miserably. There are common and popular watches that are NOT EVEN MENTIONED in this large volume. An example is the newer watches of both Rolex and Omega are not there or even mentioned! I think the Bond Seamasters and Planet Oceans and Rolex Submariners should be there! I am keeping it for the historical information and guidance but that is NOT why I purchased the book. The watches I was interested in were not even there. Also, there is no mention of any Asian companies such as Seiko, Citizen or the like. Very disappointed. But is you want to know about railroad watches at the turn of the 1900's then this is your book.

As someone who frequently comes across old interesting watches on my travels to flea markets and antique shops, I was hoping for something more like a NADA car price guide, but for watches. This isn't that. The first half is devoted to pocket watches, with much history, and the rest is mostly a general overview of prices matched with small pictures of watches, but the information isn't very detailed or complete, I guess that the number of various watches is too vast for that. There are also a number of typos. Altogether though, this can be a valuable resource of info for an aspiring watch collector, but don't expect to get all your questions answered here.

Overall informative with some great watch history in it. Beware, half of the book is dedicated to pocket watches. Many brands missing in the wrist watch section (i.e. Hublot and others) Title is a bit misleading, definitely not a complete price guide. To be fair, that would be hard to do given how many watches are out there.Pictures are pretty terrible. Is it worth buying? Yes and no. I'll keep it as I like all the historic information in it.

A truly insane amount of information in this book! Very much worth the money. Have used it a few times, and it looks great on the shelf when I'm not. Very happy with this book.

Good resource for anyone who still possesses pocket watches from the 20th century It has historical information and movement numbers from the big watch makers of the time. It is sad that the mechanism and the art that was the pocket watch has lost its value in modern times.

It is now easier to evaluate watches for sale, and there is a lot of information about how they work and also their history. I think the book is well worth the price. My only complaint would be that the pictures of pocket watch movements are often of poor quality, as if they've been copied repeatedly.

I bought it thinking that there'd be colour photos and specifications of watch brands.Unfortunately, the only pictures in this publication are of a very poor black and white variation.Also, it will only serve as a limited resource to overseas collectors as it majors in obscure American brands.It has bits of useful information and price guides for second-hand/collectors watch pieces, but I certainly wouldn't recommend it to somebody just starting out in this hobby.

I've been collecting watches and clocks since the 1980s. This annually published book is the best, most comprehensive book on the subject. It is a reference book with an incredible amount of information on watches. Whether you are new to the hobby or an advanced collector, the book is extremely useful in identifying individual watches. You can quickly determine what manufacturer made the watch, when it was made, relative scarcity and general value based on condition. As a price guide, one must keep in mind that it is a guide and the actual marketplace determines prices.

This notepad is not made for calligraphy. The paper is low quality and ink bleeds/spreads on the page itself, and also bleeds through to the next page. I'm using Higgins black calligraphy ink and a Nikko G nib, which are both standard, intro level calligraphy materials. This might work for brush lettering, although others have complained about the bleed through as well. Don't waste your money!In the photo with two separate pages, on the left is this Notepad, and on the right is simple HP 32# Laser Paper (500 sheets for ~$6) HP Paper, Premium Choice Laserjet Paper Poly Wrap, 32lb, 8.5 x 11, Letter, 500 Sheets / 1 Ream Made In The USA which you can see works MUCH better!

I LOVE this book! As others have stated, this is not a guide that teaches you lettering, it is just a practice pad, so keep that in mind when purchasing.I bought this to supplement an instructional book I already had. That book came with some pages for practice but I got a little anxiety using the practice pages because there weren't a ton of them and I wanted to be able to refer back to my instruction book as I develop my style without all my beginners "oops" moments all over it. Also, I apparently need a lot of practice (LOL, I'm trying so hard!), so I got the Calligraphy and Hand Lettering Notepad to help.This purchase was and continues to be well worth it! I am so happy I have it. I'll try to keep this short, but here's why I love this and recommend it to anyone learning lettering:1. There are a ton of pages, so if you screw up a couple of lines or even a couple of pages, who cares? There are plenty more!2. There are three sections: angled lines, straight lines, and a dot matrix. The angled lines are what I need right now because I need consistency of my angles from side to side of my letters. The dot matrix has been good for when I've worked on "bouncing" my letters because it helps make sure my bounce doesn't get too out of control. I'll try the straight lines section when I get better at my angles. This part would be great for practicing other styles of lettering, too!3. No paper will ever be completely opaque unless it's cardstock, but the paper in this book is of great quality. I have been practicing with a Tombow Fudenosuke hard tip brush pen and I am easily able to use both sides of the sheets. There is little to no bleed through. I can see what I did on the opposite side, but it isn't distracting to the point where it is unusable. I have not tried watercolor or brush markers on this paper but I don't think it would hold up well if it was used heavily with a lot of water. Regular brush pen use would probably be fine, but I can't see it doing well with heavy blending or spraying.4. I really like the cover of this book. It is really sturdy which makes it easy for me to put it in my bag and practice on the go!The ONLY suggestion I have is that I would like to see the book be spiral bound instead of having a regular binding. A spiral binding would make writing on both side of the paper much easier for both right and left handed users. It's not impossible to use it the way it is, but it would be really nice to see that change in a future printing.Overall, 5 stars. This is really helpful if you're looking for a practice pad. I'll buy it again in a heartbeat if the binding is changed whether I need a new one or not!

As a calligrapher, this was a great price for a practice pad. I used it for my calligraphy class I taught.NOTE: This is not an instructional book for learning calligraphy; that is, how to create letters; however the three types of guidelines (straight, slanted, and dots) are very helpful for many traditional and modern fonts.

This is not even a dot pad, as pictured on the cover. It is VERY beginner level lettering on grade school style lined paper. You are more likely to develop some bad lettering habits that you you will have to break if you ever want to learn real calligraphy. Don't waste your money.

This notepad sold me when I opened it up and found a code to download/print additional pages from their website. Now I don't have to worry about running out of paper. The pages are thick, but I still recommend placing a sheet underneath the one you are working with to prevent the ink bleeding through to the next page. The line are fairly light too so they don't distract from the actual calligraphy.

If you're using Tombow pens for brush lettering, the lines on this book are too small/close together. The last section with the dots on it was the only useful section. I could have just bought a pad of graph paper.

This book only consists of lined sheets of paper with dot matrix, straight lines, and angled lines to use to practice calligraphy. There is a link that is offered on the second page with a download code to get freebies and letter practice sheets. I think this book is great for the beginner who wants to learn calligraphy or brush lettering.

Typically calligraphy books include direction for how each letter can be written in the form of small arrows around each letter. This book does no have those directional arrows, and if you have a little Calligraphy training it's almost as though some of these fonts cannot be replicated with a fountain pen. Additionally, I am disappointed with the paper quality. Using standard fountain pen ink cartridges, the paper causes considerable feathering for each letter, and even bleeds through the back of each paper.
