#551,918 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

I'm a very well-read person who is very interested in topics such as travelling and experiences, and while I thought this book would be promising, the manner in which the information about Bhutan was delivered was just too awkward, as if read from an encyclopedia. I agree with other reviews that the style is more reminiscent of a blog than a memoir or novel. Although I don't know much about Bhutan, I'd like to think that I know enough cultural translation and travel fiction, and this just read as if for Ms Napoli the Bhutanese were borderline childlike only because they abide by a different set of cultural rules and norms. Not only was she unaware of her surroundings, but she also idealized (read Orientalized, provincialized) Bhutan and, what is very ironic is that she never questions what she is really doing there or what is it that make the Bhutanese "happy". Too self-centered to be about others.

There's not enough real content to make a book. Maybe if this had been edited a bit more? It just kept going on and on with epilogues upon epilogues...I started wondering when it was going to end. Again, needs to have been better organized for a more satisfying ending rather than just whimpering to a conclusion. This is NOT the quality of Eat Pray Love, but it could have been closer..

This is not a book about Bhutan...this is a book about the author. Wikipedia will give you more information about the country and its people. Napoli is incredibly patronizing in what reads like a series of Facebook posts. Wish I could get a refund for this time waster.

Having just finished Zeppa's Beyond the Sky and the Earth: A Journey into Bhutan, I picked up Radio Shangri-la as much as anything to test out my new Kindle. The two books could not be more different--I found it difficult to put Radio Shangri-La (and my Kindle) down. Zeppa was a young college grad with little experience outside of her rather limited sphere in Canada when she went on a Peace Corps like stint to teach (with little or no qualifications). By contrast, Napoli was a seasoned journalist when she was asked to help a state sponsored radio startup targeting young people. While Zeppa recounts her experience in the more remote parts of the country, Napoli hardly ventures out beyond Thimpu. So if you are looking for a travellogue, this is not the book for you. Instead, what you get is a very personal study of the Bhutanese people, as they live on the cusp between isolation and integration into the 21st century and a global economy. While both books include some rather private emotional experiences (in each case there are love interests), in Radio Shangri-La they happily remain on the margins. In contrast to the rather sketchy quality of most of the people described by Zeppa, Napoli provides a vivid descripion of the people she meets. The majority of the people Napoli describes are quite young (rather symbolic of the country as a whole), as is almost inevitable given that she what she was asked to do. She describes the fascination with all things Western (speak primarily American) and yet a deep rootedness in their own traditions (sometimes despite themselves). Then there are the 'grown ups', mostly Western educated, who are trying their best to provide the necessary leadership to the country's progress. More shadowy in the background are the king and even the king's former tutor, a Westerner who seems more entrenched in the past than anyone else. The challenges these people face as they fast forward into modern society are underscored even more when one of the young people she befriends comes to visit the U.S. and (how could it be anything else) tries to stay on as an illegal. While the focus of the book is the people populating the world Napoli has entered (a bit like Alice in Wonderland), the picture of Thimpu is similarly intense--a city undergoing an lightening speed expansion (not only for a small country like Bhutan). For someone who wants to understand the complexities of life in Bhutan rather than exposure to its exotic qualities, I would consider this book a 'Must Read'.

I've never been to Bhutan, but through Lisa's book, I feel like I got an insider's look into this tiny kingdom that I probably will never be able to visit. This is a wonderful, warm and human story of an American looking for more and looking to connect. She winds up running a radio station in Bhutan and finding a satisfaction and a cause she never would have discovered otherwise. Bravo. Great book.

I always enjoy reading about different adventures and cultures but this book went on too long. I struggled to finish the book and found myself wondering what the author actually did most of the time in Bhutan?

Love this account of how Lisa Napoli "shook up" her life and thoroughly enriched it by embracing a new adventure in Nepal. Excellent!

Fun, cheerful book about a female journalist and her experiences while living in Bhutan. If you're a radio nut like me and are expecting fascinating tales of setting up a radio station in the reclusive kingdom, exotic stories of yaks hauling radio transmitter parts up mountain tops, you're not going to find that here, but I enjoyed it anyway.

#33,678 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

I’m a huge Ken Follett fan, but this is my least favorite of his books. The idea of someone waking up with amnesia is fascinating ( that by itself would have been a great mystery book) but after a certain point the storyline is obvious, and I didn’t like any of the characters enough to care what happened to them.

I didn't think I could ever listen to anything written by Ken Follett that I would not enjoy. After listening to World Without End, Winter of the World, Fall of Giants, and Pillars of the Earth (each one a classic that I can listen to many times) I was really disappointed in Code to Zero. Plot sounded really interesting but it just did not go anywhere (in my opinion). After one listening I will send it to the resale shop.

Not the best Ken Follett novel I have read but still retained many of the features I have come to expect from his stories. Fast moving, full of suspense. Like usual I couldn't put it down. But somehow not quite in the league of previous masterpieces.

I finished this book in two days as I could not. Put it down. I live about 25 miles south of cape Canaveral and am familiar with all the places men tioned in the book. That made it even more interesting to me. I was in a rooftop revolving resturant in Bangkok with my wife when they landed on the moon. The were showing it live on TV in the resturant. The cliental were an international group. We were all mesmerized BT the landing. Both my wife and I are now in our eighties and the moon landing remains as one of those special events in our lifetime.

That well-written, elegant novel reminded me very much of John le Carre famous books, however,Code to Zero is original in its own way telling fascinating story of the Cold War of the 60-ies.The book starts with the man waking up at tbe railway station, dessed in rugs and not remembering who he was.The plot unravels as that man who is the American rocket scientist Luke Lucas tries to restore his forgotten past and understand what events led to his total amnesia. The novel describes the space race between the United States and the Soviet Union after the Russians successfully launched the first satellite and the Americans went through a number of failed attempts to catch up with their enemy.Code to Zero is the story of a few friends, who met at the university, fought in the Second World War and kept in touch after the war.Friends who liked and loved each other and some of whom betrayed the others working for their country's enemy. That is the story of life-long devotion to each other and blind readiness to sacrifice everything which is sacred and dear to them for false political beliefs.

this must have been one of the first novels by Follet. He is my favorite author but this one was very poorly written in my opinion. Plot was quite unrealistic and characters superficial. Nothing like Pillars of the Earth or the Century Trilogy

As usual, Ken Follett has not let me down. Energized writing. I had no idea what was going to happen. There was excitement at the turn of every page. Really enjoyed the pieces about the rocket. Added a great deal. Strongly recommend this book. As a history buff, I have never been disappointed with anything written by Ken Follett.

I kept asking myself, did Ken Follett really write this, or did he conract his name out to amtoher author. His books have always consumed me. History, either American or World always bored me, but Ken Follett's novels told history in a way that is acurate and entertaining. Code to Zero tells a little about the space race, but almost as na after thought. The story is very predictable and the characters are alomst boring.Well, as I said, I am a huge Ken Follett fan, so I was expecting a lot more than what I got from Code to Zero.

This eBook is an interest for one of an individual passion. Being an Oncology nurse is a daunting task for anyone brave enough to take on the complexity of the profession. If you don't know what Oncology is you're lucky. Oncology in the medical field is the study of all cancers. The etymology of the word stems from ancient Greek meaning tumor. This book is a study guide to help you understand Oncology nursing, It is a very succinct book. My friend is a nurse, and I bet she could and would use my casual interest much better than I would.

What interests me to read this NCLEX: Oncology Nursing book is because I have a lot of friends who took this test and I'm just so interested to know what is this all about. The book is basically about questions, answers, and rationales on Oncology Disorders. To read each question and the multiple choice, is an amazing feeling especially when after the correct answer is provided. This book is so educational. I may say that, it is not necessary to become a nurse to know these things if you are just want to know another field. Your knowledge will become broader through this book.

Providing customized practice questions this NCLEX: Oncology Nursing allows you to test yourself on exactly those questions you need to practice before you head into the NCLEX exam. The questions follow the format of multiple choice responses. If you are looking for an excellent and valuable prep to the exam, then this ought to be your choice!

It is such a great guide on learning Oncology and be prepared for the coming NCLEX examination. The practice question here could sharpen your knowledge more and improve your answering skills. I shared this book to my niece who’s going to take the NCLEX examination and she said that it really helped her a lot. She’s now confident to take the exam because of the help of this book. I recommend this.

This book contains 105 question which you must cover to easily crush NCLEX. All questions are very important and relevant in the area of Oncology Nursing. You can use this book for last minute reference for the exam. No more worries about NCLEX! You can easily crush it!

It is an okay book. I am a nursing student in my 3rd semester. I bought this book to practice for my final, but I felt that it didn't really test on critical thinking. It was not challenging enough.

Invention Of Memory, by Israel Rosenfield

From Publishers Weekly

Most people assume that they are able to remember faces, places and things because fixed images of them are more or less permanently stored in their brains. This is a big mistake, according to Rosenfield, who teaches at the City University of New York. Recent research studies surveyed here suggest that the brain is a creative generator of memories, not a repository: recollections are spliced from emotionally colored fragments and depend strongly on context. The author throws down yet another gauntlet by attacking the dominant view of the human brain as a computer with highly specialized regions controlling speech, movement, vision and other functions. Rosenfield (Freud: Character and Consciousness) guides the reader through the thickets of current debates. He supports a neo-Darwinian theory that holds that we construct perceptual maps through a sort of natural selection. Copyright 1988 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal

Physician Rosenfield's intention is to challenge localization theory, which hypothesizes that memories are permanently stored in specific areas of the brain. Rosenfield presents evidence that memories are not fixed images but instead past experiences altered to fit the present circumstances. Rosenfield first reinterprets clinical studies in brain research previously used to support localization theory; he then summarizes David Marr's work in artificial intelligence and Gerald Edelman's theory of Neural Darwinism to support his alternative theory. This latter information is highly technical and therefore difficult to comprehend in Rosenfield's brief descriptions. Of interest primarily to scholars and informed laypersons; recommended for larger collections. Kim Banks, Columbia Univ. Libs., New YorkCopyright 1988 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Israel Rosenfield teaches history at the City University of New York, and is the author of several other books (e.g., Freud's Megalomania: A Novel). He states in the Introduction to this 1988 book, "This book is about a myth that has probably dominated thought ever since human beings began to write about themselves: namely, that we can accurately remember people, places, and things because images of them have been imprinted and permanently stored in our brains; and that, though we may not be conscious of them, these images are the basis of recognition and hence of thought and action... It is that assumption that this book questions... The brain is a biological structure. Only in terms of biological principles will we be able to understand it. It is the burden of this book ... to establish the importance of these principles."Here are some representative quotations from the book:"How does the brain 'know' that a particular sound is an example of a word...? There are no memory traces for comparison when the word is first encountered. Therefore there must be ways in which the brain can create classifications of stimuli independently of any specific memory trace; and the procedures used in classification would then be important for subsequent recognition as well." (Pg. 63)"Memories are not fixed but are constantly evolving generalizations---recreations---of the past, which give us a sense of continuity, a sense of being, with a past, a present, and a future. They are not discrete units that are linked up over time but a dynamically evolving system." (Pg. 76)"And since context must, of necessity, constantly change, there can never be a fixed, or absolute, memory. Memory without the present cannot exist." (Pg. 80)"And yet, as the historical record shows,we not only create new environments but our ways of understanding any given scene or event, at a particular time, are very different from person to person." (Pg. 127)"If memory is a fixed record, neurophysiologists still cannot determine precisely where and how memories are stored. The hypothesis of a fixed record may have been formulated prematurely, before sufficient attention could be paid to the means by which we recognize objects and events." (Pg. 158)"One possible explanation is that our capacity to remember is not for specific recall of an image stored somewhere in our brain. Rather, it is an ability to organize the world around us in categories, some general, some specific." (Pg. 159)

Rosenfield's book stands out among mountains of books published on the trendy topic of mind and memory. Here he offers a most cogent argument, in the tradition of Hughlings-Jackson and Freud, against localizationist views, popular in the last century, now revived under the disguise of connectionist/computational models. As a historian of ideas, Rosenfield reports with vigor and clarity and classical precision; as a philosopher of mind (for that is what he is) he reasons with astonishing penetration and subtlety. Though this book might not get the attention it deserves today, as it is in many ways against the mainstream, mechanical conceptions of the mind, I have no doubt that it will eventually contribute to a emerging psychology of consciousness that does not flee from reality in search of simplistic ways of explanation.
