My elementary age boys absolutely love these. The attention that they used to give to Calvin and Hobbes has shifted to these Power Bibles. They want to get all ten. My 11-year-old previously showed no interest in the Bible, now he not only reads these Power Bibles, but has interest in his regular Bible as well. Both of my boys regularly asks questions about what they are reading, or they will chime in with Biblical knowledge in conversations because of things they've read in their Power Bibles.My family gave one of these to my nephew. My brother said when he unwrapped it, he showed disappointment on his face at getting a Bible. But an hour later, he was still reading. :-)One thing to keep in mind: Although these are called "Power Bibles," they are not verse-by-verse translations. They are a comic book, drawn and written by those who appear to have a deep love of the Bible. But this means your child won't be able to open up directly to a chapter and verse. However, they will learn the over arching story of Scripture. So think of these as more like a paraphrase or artistic approach to Scripture.

My four sons, ages 14, 12, 10 and 8, love these books. They have read them over and over and over since receiving them for Christmas.

First and foremost, this story is great if you want:1) dinosaurs2) first day of school book3) book about making friends4) subtle lesson - treat others how you want to be treated5) encouragement that you do not need to eat your classmates6) a really cute and funny stand alone storyI was researching types of book reviews ( for a future publishing venture) and found my way to the Kirkus site and a review for this book. It achieved a "star" which is a high honor. I decided to order it from Amazon to see why it had such high accolades.First impression... This book is so stinking cute and funny! I stopped reading it and sent the link to a friend before I was done ( and it's not a long book!). It's of nice quality and has a dust jacket. The pages seem to be matte which works well with the story.The story follows Penelope a dinosaur who ends up in a class full of tasty kids. The conflict arises when she has to decide between eating them and making friends.My initial impression was this would be great for the 5-8 crowd. My 3 year old picked this up instead of his new duck and goose beach book. I read it, and he started to act a little scared so, so I didn't point out some of the humorous illustrations and changed a few key points. As soon as I finished a Jurassic Park commercial came on the tv. I covered his eyes, but it was too late. Parent fail... Or so I thought. At bed time he started pretending to chomp on his father and went and got the book. It's now been read (24 hours later) several times as written. A new favorite. 😂You really cant go wrong with this book. It's one of my favorates. Did I mention, its so stinkin' cute?

Penelope is endearing, she has to deal with the unexpected surprise that she is an a school full of HUMANS, she has to deal with her innate desire to eat these delicious classmates, and find a way to curb this desire as she does wish to make friends, not eat them! Families and classrooms will love Penelope, laugh out loud at the difficulties Penelope faces, her classmates' reactions, and how she has the opportunity to experience "How would you feel if someone did that to you?". Readers will also have the opportunity to identify themselves with Penelope (hopefully not because they've eaten a classmate!), comparing actions they have taken that were not in the best interest of themselves or others, and explore how they did, or can, turn these situations around, learn from them, use empathy, start over and make friends. Humor is one of the best ways to make tough discussions accessible!

Another hilarious picture book by Ryan T. Higgins!Penelope is a T-Rex starting school. She’s looking forward to making friends with her classmates, but that doesn’t go as planned because they taste delicious! It’s not until the class pet takes a liking to Penelope’s finger that she realizes being eaten is no fun.Loved the diverse children represented in this book, and I think students will pick up on theme (treat others the way you want to be treated) easily. A must have for those who do #classroombookaday with students!Don’t forget to remove the book jacket to see the hilarious book undies!

My daughter and I both LOVE this book! She's 8 and definitely on the outer edge of picture books, but she adores dinosaurs AND was about to start at a new school so it seemed so fitting. She immediately brought it to school and got her teacher to read it aloud to her class, and then he loaned it to the other third grade teachers to read to their classes as well. It is a wonderful story, told with humor and a relatable (and adorable) female dinosaur protagonist. I also noticed and appreciated the diversity representation in the classroom, and wish more picture books would make the effort. Overall a really wonderful book, especially for all the dinosaur loving little girls out there.

Before I read this book I did not know that she had so many more architectural pieces.I remeber the controversy surrounding the Vietnam Veteran's memorial. I was fairly young but it was a topic of discussion in my family. I remember my mother believed that it was the perfect memorial for a war that killed so many and hurt so many more.. I could not have said it so well.In Maya Lin: Thinking with Her Hands I developed a richer understanding of the woman who created so much meaningful art. I learned about her upbrining in a family that treasured art, the dislocation of her parents who longed to go home to China, how much she loved school and loved learning and how, though shy and reserved, she decided to enter the contest to build a memorial for Vietnam Vets. I was stunned by the Vietnam Vets Memorial when I finally had the opportunity to see it in Washinton, D.C. and suprised and moved to learn that she designed so many more beautiful buildings. Honestly, after seeing the pictures in the book I want the opportunity to see all of Maya Lin's work and it is now on my bucket list. Thank you for the wonderful crisp and clear photographs and the rich detail of this book.Thank you to Netgalley for the opportunity to review this book.

The protagonist is a 50ish year old career naval officer who is sent to Berlin prior to WWII. He is an astute observer and is knowledgeable about war strategy. He writes a brief predicting Stalin and Hitler will become allies which turns out to be what happened (at least prior to WWII). The brief is read by Franklin Delano Roosevelt (FDR) who is impressed and begins to use him as an independent observer to provide him a sense of what things are like in Germany and Europe. He ends up going to London during the bombing of London and Russia during WWII during the time when the Germans were advancing on Moscow. Also, mixed in with the story is a review of military strategy by a German Officer who provides his view on world events of the time. Mixed in with what is going on with him, which includes a very tempting romance with a younger woman, are the lives of his two sons, one of whom marries a feisty Jewish Girl who gets stuck behind enemy lines, and the other who is in Pearl Harbor at the time of its bombing by Japan.All in all I enjoyed the book thoroughly. I couldn’t wait to read it each night, and also during periods of rain while on our trip. It is long, almost 900 pages, but very absorbing. Also, I got some insight into how military planners think about war strategy as well as some history of what happened before and during WWII in terms of which countries were invaded, how the US viewed the war prior to the bombing of Pearl Harbor and many other aspects of life at that time. I highly recommend it.

Weighing in at 885 pages The Winds of War is epic in every sense of the word. As I worked through those pages sometimes it felt like it was never going to end, and I never wanted it to. The story follows the Henry family through the years immediately before the start of the second world war through the attack on Pearl Harbor. Wouk covers a lot of ground and he manages this by the clever device of following the family patriarch, Victor “Pug” Henry, through the ups and downs of his naval career.The book could easily have taken on a Forest Gump type quality, making it seem like the hapless Pug just fell into these situations that allowed the reader to be where all the action was in following the trajectory of the war. Fortunately, Pug Henry is a likeable and competent character. Indeed, his stalwart approach to his life and to his work make him both charming and an eminently reliable pivot for the story. Pug manages to personally meet all of the major political figures of the war – Roosevelt, Churchill, Hitler, Stalin and even Mussolini – but even his wife does not know this. He is modest and circumspect and clever. This might have all become a bit too neat, so Wouk also follows the Henry children, who are all young adults in this time period to give us a more complete picture of the war. In this way, Wouk captures the massive social upheaval and the mood of the American public during the war and also allows us to visit those theatres of action that Pug cannot reasonably be.The book is made epic, engaging and heartfelt by Wouk’s weaving of world historical events into the personal lives of the Henry family members. The scope and impact of the war is brought home to the reader through the story of each of the Henrys. Wouk, who is remarkably still alive at 102, manages to cover all of the major events of the war, several battles, and the home front. It is an amazing feat in terms of historical coverage, but also in how much he made me care for these fictional characters. It truly was a different time. Men and women behaved differently than they do now. Standards and expectations were different and it was fascinating to observe. Just as it was fascinating to observe the way the war changed these things.I would have been more than a little sad when I got to the end, except that the even longer sequel, “War and Remembrance” awaited me.

A few months ago I decided to reread Herman Wouk's two novels about WW2 - "The Winds of War" and "War and Remembrance" - and see if they'd held up in the 35 to 40 years since they were published. Since both books are huge, I'd read a few chapters at a time on my Ipad, when I had some free time. I recently finished "War and Remembrance" and have to say that both novels are as good as they were when I first read them. However, maybe I appreciate them more today.Good historical fiction can teach a reader as well as entertain him. Much as "War and Peace" have sent readers to encyclopedias and other books to "learn more" about Napoleon, tsarist society, the ill-fated French invasion of Russia, etc, Herman Wouk's two novels can spur the reader who wants to go beyond the personal stories of the Henry family and into the historical period in which they lived. Although the character of Admiral Victor Henry is sort of "Zelig-like" - popping up in different cities and battles as the pre-war and war occur - he is used as the focal point of what Wouk wants the reader to know. And both books have an added dimension besides the plot line. Wouk includes running commentary from a book one of the fictional characters - General Armin von Roon, a Nazi general - is writing about Germany and WW2. Victor Henry is "editing" von Roon's memoirs and often corrects the general. By including the von Roon memoirs, the reader then sees WW2 from two perspectives, Allied and German.Herman Wouk's writing is a bit flat, but I don't think he's ever been a particularly flowery writer. And maybe "flat" is the only way to write about events that run from Auschwitz to the Battle of Midway to the conference at Yalta. But those are the "events" in the books which are peopled by the characters. All are drawn with nuance and none is a caricature. I thoroughly enjoyed going back and reading these two books. I was constantly going from Kindle on my Ipad to Wikipedia to check this battle or that conference. It really was a learning experience!!
