Gr 1–3—A sweet-faced girl in a red hood borrows a special book from her teacher. As she runs home, oblivious to what is happening, the words escape. While a fox nets the jumbled letters, readers can discern "once upon a time," "wizard," "bears," etc. At home, the child is disappointed, thinking the book lacks a story. Then she hears the whisper: "You can imagine the words…the stories….There are never any rules…imagining just is." She develops an approach, looking more closely at the pictures and asking herself questions from her vantage point at the border. Ironically, this is not a wordless experience for readers; the girl develops opening sentences for the next seven magical compositions. Zagarenski's signature wheels, teacups, crowns, and tigers populate these richly layered, golden scenes, full of texture and mystery: an elephant and lion float by on a quest, a wizard blows bubbles that become real creatures. During the girl's return trip to school, the fox requests help reaching grapes. Those familiar with Aesop may be surprised that no trickery is involved. The endpapers reveal the edited fable; the listening fox has also learned about imagining and reimagining. Stories about storytelling can be hard sells to children, who generally prefer the familiar arc of a sustained narrative. However, the mixed-media art is so stunning in this Caldecott-honor artist's first foray into writing that they will make an exception. This book tells the story of a little girl, an avid reader, who has a magic book and is terribly sad to realize that all the words have leaked out of it during her rush to get it home to read. Then she hears a whisper (from whom? you get to guess!) saying that imagining is perfect for this-- you can make up your own beginning, middle, and end to any story, just start with words, then make sentences, and then... This is followed by wonderful pictures with prompts to take it from there. And each double-wide spread has elements in common, sometimes tiny and hiding in the background, sometimes more prominent. Why does the boat have ... wheels? Do you see the bees? The yellow ball? The golden key? The blue bear? The crane? The fleur-de-lis? The tea cups? Now what?I have just returned from a four-day visit with grandchildren, and took this as a gift to the 4-yr-old, whose preferred amusement is video-based. The first time we read it, he had very little to say, single words only, but began to notice the exquisite detail in the pictures with a little prompting. The second time, at his request the next day, he delightedly pointed them out and had a few sentences. At the end of my visit, on the sixth read, he had developed story lines and explanations for who those figures were, where they were going, and why.We all know there's nothing like a good snuggle with a warm grandmother or auntie or granpa. This book is more than stories, it's memories.
Wow wow wow wow! I was so DELIGHTED to open this book up! The illustrations! The open-ended story starters! We haven't given it to our 5 year old yet, but I already told several friends that this is a must-own! Especially all of those story tellers out there!
I loved the illustrations from Sleep Like a Tiger, and was eagerly awaiting this book to read with my 5 year old. It did not disappoint. My kid is very logical and already tries hard to shy away from perceived failures, so unleashing unbridled imagination is difficult for her. This book was so gentle in teasing out ideas and, eventually, stories, that my daughter never once felt intimidated. She loved that the main character was looking at the same book she was . The depth and complexity of the stories we were developing expanded naturally with the pacing of the narrative itself -- as the main character grew more confident in her imagination, so too did my daughter. We've only had this book for 2 days, but already it has assumed a treasured place on my daughter's bookshelf. Even before we ended it tonight, she was already thinking about how we would "read" it tomorrow.My daughter is just starting to read simple words on her own, and I think she is feeling intimidated by books right now. They are linear and rigid -- the story is locked in by the words on a page, progressing through a structure she is just starting to realize exists while also having to acknowledge she doesn't yet understand. We read books or tell stories together every night, but she hasn't been nearly as excited about those activities as she was even a few months ago. However, so far, The Whisper has been heartily welcomed. The book emphasizes that, within its pages, no wrong can be done in telling a story, and that every story can be different with each retelling. To my 5 year old at least, who has been challenged by the complexities of the English language, I think that has been very freeing. I could not ask for a better experience in a book.
This is a beautifully illustrated book by Pamela Zagarenski. The story is about a little girl reading a book with no words and she needs to make the story up from the illustration. She starts each story for a paragraph or so, but doesn't complete the story. I assume one is to create their own story based on the picture or continue the story as the little girl laid out. Either way, it is a little more advanced than the normal story book.The book is really beautiful with a mixed-media layout and very other-worldly characters and animals. We love SLEEP LIKE A TIGER, also illustrated by Zagarenski, and the drawings are very similar.This is a book we'll put away after a while and bring out again as our daughter gets more advanced in her stories and imagination.
I simply love Pamela Zagarenski's illustrations. That was why I bought this book. To be honest, when I first bought it, I was hugely disappointed. I stuck it on the shelf for several months, and pulled it down again recently. And I realized that my daughter was just too young for it the first time around, because now we both love it.The story features a girl who loves to read and is loaned a very special book by her teacher. She is so very excited to read it, but her joy turns to frustration when she discovers that the words are all missing. But then a voice whispers that she should create her own stories. She goes back through the book, looking carefully at each of the pictures and creating her own story to go with each. But what is recorded in the actual book is just the beginning -- the set up if you will -- for each of these stories that the girl crafts. This is what I found so disappointing at first -- my daughter was too young to understand that, and it came off as just a bunch of disjointed clippets from stories. But if your kid is ready to imagine their own stories, this book is awesome! And the illustrations are fantastic!!
I love this book. My 5 year daughter has been "reading" books by herself since she was a baby. This book is perfect for her imagination. It reminds me that the best stories are not written in books but in our imaginations.
A beautiful and beautifully illustrated book.My child loves it.I love it.Other kids who just heard me talk about it wanted it for their birthday.Kids who aren’t ready to be grabbed by a story whose focus is on the power of making up your own story will still be engaged by the illustrations of strangecand wonderful scenes.The final page is worth buying the book entire.It shows Aesop’s fox rewriting her own story to choose differently and author a happy ending.
