I had been meaning to read this graphic novel for a while, having heard good things about how it used a sci-fi / action story to talk about homophobia, racism, free will, first love, and self-acceptance; and in light of recent current events, it seemed like the perfect time. The artwork is absolutely wonderful, and perfectly captures all the nuances of the story, which is pretty great in itself. While it can occasionally feel a little predictable, the tale of Deacon and Jeff was sweetly romantic and contained many moments that I found very relatable, in spite of the science fiction setting and sporadic bursts of violence. In a way, this story is similar to recent British hit anthology show "Black Mirror", in that it uses its sci-fi setting to tell a deeply human story to great effect. While it may fall a little short of being a masterpiece, it is a great comic, and one I would love to see continued.
I may not be much of a fan of comic books, but I do consider myself a fan of novels. It's very fortunate to have gay stories and gay writers, but the concept of a robot murdering everybody on a ship and then convincing the last survivor to fall in love with him comes off rapey and extremely far fetched. Further, the dialogue between the therapist and robot encourages belief in self-facing homophobia. Finally, the book steps away from the unbelievable conversations about emotions and love with robot and human to some real, tense sci-if action only to end 10 pages later.I'm very conflicted as a gay man seeking gay media. If only I could lower my expectations, I'd find more joy. However, I find that the bar is set too low for gay media, and that gay stories can get away with subpar dialogue by catering to very basic sexual interests.I give the book a second star as award for creation of gay media, attention to detail in artwork, and for ALMOST writing a compelling storyline. the bits that were great didn't last long enough, and the bits about love were often cringe-inducing. I hope you find more joy as a reader of this novel, but I won't be recommending it to my friends.
I am a big fan of Alex Woolfson's works. He does a good job making a narrative that is easy to believe and true to life, even when the circumstances are themselves larger than life. The characters are fantastic, very well rounded for the small amount of time we get with them. Overall the story itself is enjoyable, the drama of the situation and the feelings evoked during the "present" and "flashback" scenes are very well crafted.As good as Alex Woolfson's story is, it is Winona Nelson's art that truly captures me. She does an absolutely fantastic job with the scenes. The background and location art is well done, but it is with her portrayal of the various characters that leaves me smitten. She easily brings the story to life and captures emotions beautifully.While I love the story and the art I will say that the pacing to it is a bit... iffy, perhaps, once you get to the second half or perhaps the last quarter. Suddenly the story that has, until then, been so well paced starts charging toward the end. You end up being left with an ending that, while in no way bad or poorly done, feels as if it's come a bit too soon and in some ways, out of the blue.
Alex Woolfson, if you don't know of him I won't explain. This book and his characters are well thought out and developed. LOL. Whole new meaning with "what would you do if a real man touched you" , as a guard gets choked! He, he, he! Lol. Love the sci-fi comics with AI showing more humanity than humans.
You would never believe you could read this entire comic for free on the web. It's not simply the same old thing in the form of aflimsy comic. This book is so high-quality and LARGE. It's practically the size of an artbook rather than a comic and has a lot of information from the site on the back as well as several extras, including the process of the artist getting such clean lines. The "roughs" look better than most comics I've seen and the pencils are where I'd stop and scan because they are so exact that the inking seems superfluous, but not for this. If you generally do not like comics in color, it is subdued enough that it makes sense and works as well in print as it does on the computer, especially if you have a low resolution and have to scroll. The book is heavy and a completely different experience from reading it online. If you enjoy the comic, you owe it to yourself to buy it.
It has all been said, the art work is superb, the story is superb and the pacing is superb. I would go so far as to say that you can be gay or straight and still love this magnificent love story between Deacon and android killing machine and Jeff the frail human that he has to kill but falls in love with and must tell his superiors what happened and why he should not be deactivated. The wordplay and psychological aspects of this story are outstanding. I need there to be a part 2!
An amazing comic that asks the age old science fiction question, "What does it mean to be human?" A bit too short, but this started as a web comic, so it's understandable. There's a bit of a "true love conquers all" theme here that is very satisfying but perhaps keeps the narrative from being as lofty as it would like to be.
Great story and great graphics, thank you! It was also great to read about how the novel was made - learning about the story scripting, outlining, as well as the graphics for it - thanks lots, was an awesome read throughout.
