Recently, I purchased three different National Audubon Society Pocket Guides as gifts for nieces and nephews.. They have already spent many hours outdoors, pocket guide in hand, ID'ing and reading about the bird, butterfly or insects they have seen. Their ages range from kindergarten to 4th grade, and working together they are learning what's in their own backyard and a little information about each one. These children spend a lot of time outdoors normally, but I think these pocket guides would entice other children to be more inquisitive about nature and maybe even pick up a hobby that would provide a lifetime of learning and enjoyment - at the same time getting them outdoors and getting exercise in the process.I would also say that the books are so well illustrated and written that adults would also appreciate them as a gift!

Love this book! Great description on birds and will be able to figure out birds outside my house now.

Although Dietrich and his family were somewhat cushioned during World War I due to their wealth and summerhouse which they could escape to, they still felt the effects of the rationing whilst in Berlin. Brought up as a Lutheran, Dietrich's mother did all the Bible readings. Dietrich's father, a psychiatrist and neurologist, was not a believer.As a teenager, Dietrich decided he wanted to be a theologian much to his family's surprise. His 18th birthday present was an extended two month trip to Italy with his brother, Klaus. Dietrich loved Rome and this trip changed his life. By the time Dietrich arrived back in Berlin, he had found his life's mission - to investigate the real meaning of the word 'church'.Klaus, Dietrich's brother, was working beside Albert Einstein and Max Planck so that gives you an idea who was around in this era. Dietrich spent one year as an assistant pastor to a Germany community in Barcelona, Spain. He enjoyed his time there and learned to speak fluent Spanish. From 1930-31 he was in the USA where he was amazed at the racial discrimination. Studying in New York, he also traveled to Washington D.C., Cuba and Mexico.In this book you will learn how Hitler and the Nazi Party came into control over Germany. It was fast and swift! In the beginning it all sounded good to many but it was not long before the Aryan Paragraph was introduced (April 1934). In July the state run church for German Christians was introduced. Dietrich opposed all this but many ministers were happy with the arrangement! What happened on June 29th, 1934? When was the invasion of Poland?Dietrich helped start up the Confessing Church. The seminary he taught at and ran was away from Nazi prying eyes for a year enabling Dietrich to help graduate two sets of students. It was not long though before the Gestapo were arresting pastors from the Confessing Church. Joining the resistance was dangerous but Dietrich knew he had to do it. Where was he stationed? What was his job? When was he arrested?Read this compelling story of a man dedicated to the Lord no matter the cost. For those of you who are not aware, Dietrich's life on this earth ended by a trip to the gallows so if you are reading this aloud to you family, make sure you are prepared for the questions that may arise. This book is well written and I highly recommend it from our family to yours!Dietrich Bonhoeffer 1906 to 1945

How many of us pray for the end of evil? How many of us do anything about it? Take a lesson from Deitrich Bonhoeffer. A Christian, a Pastor and a man that started his battle on his knees and ended it on his feet. This book takes you through his life from an early age untill his death (also early). With the rise of Hitler and the Third Reich, Bonhoeffer knew within his heart and soul he had to do something to stop this ever growing evil. Follow him as he makes his decision as to what he was to do and how he would do it. I personally seen a close resemblance to him and the Apostle Paul by their actions and ministry both in and out of prison. I'm glad this book was printed under the title of "Christian Heroes, then and now" because Bonhoeffer, without a doubt qualifies as one. The book was well written and easy to follow. I hope you will take the time to read it.

This is not your average Christian biography that makes you feel more of a desire for God after reading it. It does, however, give the clearest details of what the church was suffering in WWII Germany (before and during). For that reason I give it 4 stars. Its real purpose in my opinion is to prepare Christians for eventual suffering and persecution in this world.

An enjoyable and inspiring read that flowed such that it drew one along without effort. Along the way you also learn a bit of how it was in Nazi Germany as well. Not difficult to read. It was written at a level even young adults could comprehend and draw benefit from.

Oh so good. Written so youth can understand and not be frightened. Dietrich Bonhoeffer lived thru world war 1; and in WW 2 was part of the group to assassinate hitler.

While not a book delving into minute details of history, this was a summary book that contained detail where you needed to understand what and why the reactions were in response. I gave this book a 5-Star rating because of its readability. The book covered much of the life of Dietrich Bonhoeffer which roughly was 1930's to 1945 during the ascent of the Nazi Party in Germany until the murder of Bonhoeffer in 1945.

This is more for middle school or teens and I am age 40, but I really enjoyed it because it had plenty of information and didn't take very long to read - could get the whole true story in less time.

My son took it from my hands and read it in a few hours and learned a lot of history. Great child friendly reading format that tales the true history.

I truly enjoyed Meeting and Event Planning For Dummies because the information is simple and to the point. This book gives alot of websites to help with event planning. Also, it gives information of things that you would never think about when planning an event. I highly recommend this book to anyone who likes to plan events or who does event planning for a living.

I purchased "Meeting & Event Planning for Dummies" by Susan Friedmann because I am researching ways of marketing and attracting people to such public events as fan conventions. Unfortunately, Friedmann's book has little to say about such matters. It does contain a lot of information for businesses who wish to schedule more specifically targeted events (such as consortium meetings) for clients or potential clients. One particularly interesting section discusses methods of identifying and scheduling appropriate speakers for such events. The book also contains information on how a business' representatives can optimize the effectiveness of their appearances at trade shows. I found the book a good starting place for such information. It is current enough to have a variety of references to useful Websites, most of which appear current. (I have not reviewed them all.) But it is most appropriate for specialized types of events (such as businesses who have a targeted and/or more or less captive audience) rather than for groups attempting to schedule more general public events.

Perfect for helping a newbie learn the ins & outs of event planning. Got me on the right track.

I liked this book because I didn't want to pay to take a class on this topic, but I wanted to learn the tricks of the biz. I love the helpful tidbits this book offers. a great start to my collectionl

CJ is a wonderful writer. I love all her books. This one, I didn't realize was a YA, until I got into it. I do read YA.Synesthesia is an interesting phenomenon. I've heard about it, so I wanted to read about it.Ella is being raised by her gram and uncle. When a boy from her childhood comes along to ask her questions about her parents death, chaos ensues.All of CJ's books I read in one night, I didn't with this one. However it was compelling. I recommend it highly.

I usually really enjoy CJ Lyons but this seemed a little on the young side for me. It was a good story and I feel that the author played out both sides of synesthesia, those with it and those proclaiming to have it. It was a pretty good twist to it that I didnâ€™t necessarily see coming (at least not all of it). The only thing I really didnâ€™t like was how obsessive Alec was in his search for what he thought of as the truth of the mystery to be solved. He also wasnâ€™t very likable through most of the book, he was too busy apologizing for all of his screw ups. It also kind of slowed down for a while but I finished it and was satisfied with the ending and found it believable.

This book was intriguing at first but lost its steam about 1/4 way through. Itâ€™s way too far fetched and the â€œplot twistâ€ was so ridiculous. Someone else said there was barely any lead up and everything happens so quickly which is true. The tone of the writing was very depressing. It was an easy read due to short chapters but Iâ€™d definitely have to say you can skip this one.

As a grandma I am pleased to fi.nd that good books are still being written for young adults and can be enjoyed by the older reader.

CJ Lyons knows how to tell a story so you do not want to put her books down. This book was no exception. I loved the use of seeing colors, tasting words and hearing feelings that each character represented.The mystery wasnâ€™t hard to decipher, but to me the characters drove the storyline with their uniqueness.A dedicated reader and fan of CJ

I really didn't know what to expect when I started reading this book. It definitely exceeded my expectations! I loved the characters from the get go. They were real, with imperfections & totally relatable. The story was suspenseful , thought provoking & the descriptions and word building Were incredibly vivid.

This book reminds us that we do not have all the answers to our medical issues. There is a definite need to understand the psychological issues that may be involved. In order to do so, one must find the right kind of expert who has a talent with dealing these matters. The book identifies one such practitioner who is now booked two years out. If you have someone who is chronically ill, this book is worth reading to get some ideas on how to help them.

I enjoyed the book very much. I was glad to find someone who believes it is better to find the solution to the health problem, if possible, rather than take a prescription with possible side effects that does not cure but only treats the symptoms. There were seven lives with a different problem, including the author's own son, that she wrote about in this book. The author says, at the start, that this may not be for everybody and is not putting down doctors. She used them herself but if you can get to the root of the problem, it is worth it to take the time to give it a try; like eliminating certain foods from your diet. Parts of the book were not easy for me to understand but I understood enough.

Excellent! A must read. Inspired to be more alert and careful. Author is realistic and funny too.

My daughter has a chronic illness. Enjoyed reading about successes of others through focusing on nutrition and exercise. Hope my daughter picks up this book and gains a possible new way to look at her health issues.

Like the individuals profiled in The Road to Character, David Brooks's book is flawed, but not without its redeeming qualities. Brooks wants to recover the "eulogy virtues," noting that the "resume virtues," while they tend to be more highly valued in modern culture, tend not to produce "deep satisfaction." To this end, he profiles a wide variety of individuals. It's a varied group; I wonder if there's ever been a book to feature St. Augustine, civil rights leader A. Philip Randolph, and Joe Namath? As you might expect, if you've read Brooks's other books or New York Times editorials, he is a colorful story teller and brings the subjects to life.The variety and quality of the individuals about whom Brooks writes is the first problem I have with The Road to Character. As individual pieces, the biographical essays are okay, but they didn't adhere to one another the way I think Brooks wanted them to. The result is a loosely assembled structure, not a finely honed argument. Further, while his subjects demonstrated admirable character traits, too many of them had an overall character that I would not want to emulate (and some that I definitely would reject as an example). That's part of his point, too. As he says, "The good news of this book is that it is okay to be flawed, since everyone is."There are plenty of bright spots, worthy of reflection, in The Road to Character. One of my favorites, since it reminded me of something my parents always told me, the third of four children, was "The more you love, the more you can love. A person who has one child does not love that child less when the second and third child come along. . . . Love expands with use."So in spite of writing about some people I didn't end up liking, Brooks's overall project comes through. Dignity, love, self-control, and, most of all, selflessness are character traits anyone can agree are worthy of pursuing, no matter your cultural or religious preferences. By focusing on the eulogy virtues--kindess, bravery, honesty, faithfulness--we can build the kind of character that might be written about in a book about character.Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the complimentary electronic review copy!

Iâ€™m a student of moral development, so the idea that a scholar devoted himself to the root of character development pulled me into this book.I was grateful for the multiple vignettes on various men and women who found themselves on their path to maturity and ultimately character. It was difficult to follow the theme at times, but that was part of the charm of this book â€” I found myself getting immersed in each real-life story.The author returns often to the Protestant ethic...one that believes we are inherently flawed and cannot be made whole on our own. I share this ethic, but I was disappointed how forceful the author was at pointing it out (too often). It would have been more effective to allow the reader to arrive at these concepts on his/her own.The last chapter effectively summarizes the authorâ€™s intent, that pride is the root of all that undermines character, and humility is the root of the development of it.I highly recommend this book to any student of moral development. While morality is can be found on many paths, this one quote from the book is the common denominator:â€œCharacter is built in the course of your inner confrontation. Character is a set of dispositions, desires, and habits that are slowly engraved during the struggle against your own weakness.â€

Writing an adequate review for best-selling author David Brookâ€™s â€œThe Road to Characterâ€ has been challenging. I typically work with five pages of detailed notes when reviewing a book but found myself with twenty-one pages for this review.Brooks has written a gem of a book, one that raises the bar for future discussions of â€œcharacterâ€. It takes time to absorb and savor. Brooks says publicly that he wrote this book to save his own soul.â€œThe Road to Characterâ€ is about the cultural shift from the â€œlittle meâ€ to the â€œBIG ME,â€ from a culture that encourages people to think humbly of themselves to a culture that encourages people to see themselves as the center of the universe. This cultural shift encourages us to think about having a great career but leaves nothing for us to develop an inner life and character. For Brooks, we have lost our way to â€œbeing goodâ€ and â€œdoing good.â€Brooks frames the discussion by contrasting â€œresume virtuesâ€ - those skills that one brings to the job market that contribute to external success â€“ with â€œeulogy virtuesâ€ â€“ those that are at the core of our being like courage, honesty, loyalty, and the quality of our relationships that contribute to real joy. These are embodied in two competing parts, Adam I and Adam II, of our nature that are a constant source of contradiction and tension.Adam I is the external Adam. He wants to build, create, produce and discover things. He is characterized by actively seeking recognition, satisfying his desires, being impervious to the moral stakes involved. He has little regard for humility, sympathy, and honest self-confrontation, which are necessary for building character. He wants to have high status, win victories, and conquer the world.Adam II is the internal Adam. He wants to embody certain moral qualities. He wants to love intimately, to sacrifice self in the service of others, to live in obedience to some transcendent truth, and to have a cohesive inner soul that honors creation in oneâ€™s own possibilities. Adam II is charity, love, and redemption.Adam I is at work in todayâ€™s â€œBIG MEâ€ culture. â€œBig Meâ€ messages are everywhere; you are special; trust yourself; and be true to yourself. This â€˜Gospel of Selfâ€™ begins with childhood when awards and rewards are given for just being, not doing. â€œWe are all wonderful, follow your passion, donâ€™t accept limits and chart your own course.â€This has led to an ethos based on a â€œravenous hunger in a small space of self-concern, competition, and a hunger for distinction at any cost,â€ an ethos where envy has replaced admiration. This self-centeredness leads to several unfortunate directions: selfishness, the use of other people as a means to an end, seeing oneself as superior to everyone else, and living with a capacity to ignore and rationalize oneâ€™s imperfections and inflate oneâ€™s virtues.The â€œBIG MEâ€ culture distorts the purpose of our journey and the meaning of life. â€œParts of themselves go unexplored and unstructured. They have a vague anxiety that their life has not achieved its ultimate meaning and significance. They live with unconscious boredom, not really loving, and unattached to the moral purpose that gives life itâ€™s worth. They lack the internal criteria to make unshakable commitments. They never develop inner constancy, the integrity that can withstand popular disapproval or a serious blow. They foolishly judge others by their abilities and not by their worth. This external life will eventually fall to pieces.â€In this increasingly â€œBIG MEâ€ culture, Brooks became haunted by the voices of the past and the quality of humility and character they exhibited. People in the past guarded themselves against some of their least attractive tendencies to be prideful, self-congratulatory, and hubristic. â€œYou would not even notice these people. They were reserved. They did not need to prove anything in the world.â€ They embodied humility, restraint, reticence, temperance, respect, and soft discipline. â€œThey radiated a sort of moral joy. They answered softly when challenged harshly. They were silent when unfairly abused, dignified when others tried to humiliate them, and restrained when others tried to provoke themâ€¦But they got things done. They were not thinking about what impressive work they were doing. They were not thinking about themselves at all. They just seemed delighted by the flawed people around them. They made you feel funnier and smarter when you spoke with them. They moved through all social classes with ease. They did not boast. They did not lead lives of conflict-free tranquility but struggled towards maturity. These people built a strong inner character, people who achieved a certain depth. They surrendered to the struggle to deepen their soul.â€Brooks highlights the lives of prominent and influential people - Francis Perkins, Dwight Eisenhower, Dorothy Day, George C. Marshall, A. Philip Randolph, Bayard Rustin, George Eliot, St. Augustine, Samuel Johnson, Michel de Montaigne â€“ to articulate the diverse roads taken by a diverse set of people, white and black, male and female, religious and secular, literary and non-literary. To go up, one first has to go down (The â€œU Curveâ€); one must descend into the valley of humility to climb to the heights of character. Only then will one have the ability to see their own nature, their everyday self-deceptions, and shatter all Illusions of self-mastery.Humility is central to the journey. Humility leads to wisdom, a moral quality of knowing what you donâ€™t know and finding a way to manage ignorance, uncertainty, and limitation. It offers freedomâ€¦freedom from the need to prove your superiority. Alice had to be small to enter Wonderland. â€œOnly the one who descends into the underworld rescues the beloved.â€The paradox for Adam I is that he cannot achieve enduring external success unless he builds a solid moral core as sought by Adam II. Without inner integrity, your Watergate, your scandal, your betrayal, will eventually happen.
