Review

"For the second time a seasoned group of scholars with extensive military experience have written a lucid, balanced, and especially valuable analysis of the laws of war in an era of transnational terrorism. I know of no other collection that so effectively and seamlessly blends the rich perspectives drawn from military experience with thoughtful scholarly analysis. From threshold questions of the applicability of the laws of war to detailed examination of targeting, interrogation and treatment, detention and trial, this is a must-read." -William C. Banks, Director, Institute for National Security and Counterterrorism, Board of Advisors Distinguished Professor, Syracuse University College of Law "Issues of targeting, detention, interrogation, and prosecution are among the most pressing and controversial questions in our politics today. Some say the treatment of these topics in the laws of war must evolve in order to account for the changing face of armed conflict, while others argue that the case for new rules has not been made, and in any event disagreement abounds as to when the laws of war apply at all. Unfortunately, we don't often hear the perspective of military practitioners in this debate. This indispensable volume closes that gap, and is a must-read for experts and novices alike." --Professor Robert M. Chesney, University of Texas School of Law, Member of the U.S. Dept. of Justice's Gitmo Task Force "The authors' blend of scholarly perspective with military experience makes the discussion of intricate legal issues relating to the declared 'war on terror' more captivating." --Gentian Zyberi International Law Observer"The best new book you can read on the subject. . . Rarely does one get the chance to read a careful, academic analysis written from the vantage point of scholars with such extensive experience with so many different facets of the subject of their study" --Jeffrey Kahn, ConcurringOpinions.com "This book is mandatory reading for both lawyers and policy makers involved in national security. While some people believe international law and the law of armed conflict are irrelevant in conflicts with terrorists that abide by neither, the authors thoughtfully argue that with advancements in applicable law for the law to retain legitimacy, and integration of law, policy, and strategy--we can win, but if we abandon the Rule of Law, we have already lost." -Walter B. Huffman, Dean Emeritus and Professor of Law, Texas Tech University School of Law, Major General, U. S. Army, Retired "The passing of 'industrial' wars, for which the basic laws of armed conflict were written, to today's unconventional wars challenges the utility of our force and the legal and moral foundations upon which Americans must fight. The authors elucidate and guide the reader through these complexities with powerful analysis. This is a book for warriors at all levels who have to make the agonizing decisions in the conduct of war." -Lt. Gen. Harry E. "Ed" Soyster, US Army (ret)

Professor Geoff Corn is a distinguished legal scholar with many years of experience as an international practitioner. Here, he and his team have provided an articulate analysis of contemporary legal issues; this edited volume is unique from many other recent works that are more "policy" oriented. I recommend this book for lawyers, military officers and persons with an interest in a nuanced understanding of current events.

Outstanding title and a worthwhile read. delivered in a timely fashion. A must for any student of jus in bello and jus ad bellum

This book was written by a team of legal heavyweights; the authors are all well-recognized for their commonsensical, accurate, and important insights into many of the most critical issues facing contemporary policymakers and military leaders. I deal with these same issues as a senior level legal advisor at the highest levels of our government. Upon reading the first segments, and scanning the contents, I quickly realized that this book would soon become a well-worn resource by the lawyers and staff officers who work in my orbit. Now that I have completed my read, I give this book my highest praise and enthusiastic endorsement; it has both substantial value to academics and pratitioners alike. After learning that Geoff Corn and Dick Jackson were involved in this effort, I had very high expectations, and these expectations were easily realized by their superb work product!!Colonel Rich Whitaker

This collection should be on the shelf of anyone interested in the law of armed conflict/international humanitarian law. The most important subjects of the transnational "War on Terror" are presented with clarity and precision (these include the choice of law, targeting, detention, interrogation, war crimes liability, command responsibility, and the difficulty inherent in translating legal principles into on-the-ground practice). What is more, this book brings under one cover what few other books can: the collective experience of scholars with over a century of experience in the United States Army and United States Navy. These authors acquired that experience as military prosecutors and defense counsel, legal advisors and strike planners, and as combatants. This shared experience has not produced complete harmony of opinion: the reader encounters debate within its pages over both the current application of the law and, consequentially, its future. Buy this book and you will soon find that it wears the unmistakable badge of all useful books: a well-worn spine and dog-eared pages.Jeffrey KahnAssistant Professor of LawSMU Dedman School of Law

The War on Terror and the Laws of War is an outstanding contribution to the emerging body of important scholarship in this area. Written by scholars/lawyers/practitioners and experts in their fields, this book is a must read for those interested in Post-Sept 11th national security jurisprudence. This book will be an excellent textbook for college and graduate-level courses focused on such issues as detention, interrogation, targeting, and litigation.Jody Prescott and David Wallace

Professor Corn is a very seasonsed and accomplished retired military officer and attorney. His views are very direct and to the point--he is not one to "beat around the bush" and when appropriate, "calls a spade a spade". I look forward to reading this book and know that it will provide insight into how the military justice system operates, and/or "should operate".Douglas S. WackerCaptain, USMC

From Booklist

Illustrated with dramatic, soft-edged digital artwork, the 101 free-verse poems in this spacious collection present Christian messages from the Bible to talk about at home and in church groups. The frequent question-and-answer format adds to the conversational tone, starting with lines accompanying an image of a huge horse leaping across the end pages: “God loves the horse / how much more must he love you?” “Dance!” shows “the whole universe dancing around the sun.” In contrast is “Cataclysm!,” which discusses planets that are in uproar because “we sinned.” Some entries are lighthearted: just as you don’t put porridge in a car engine, the Bible says don’t put anyone except God in the center of your life. Most, though, are serious and may disturb some, even as they stress forgiveness: God transformed murderers such as Moses and St. Paul into heroic leaders—“what could he do for you?” At the bottom of each page is the biblical passage on which the poem is based, and appended sources are paired with “more things to think about.” Grades 1-4. --Hazel Rochman

I bought Thoughts That Make Your Heart Sing, hoping to be able to read and listen to it with my 3 1/2 year old (She basically has the Jesus Storybook Bible memorized from listening to it in the car so much). While I think most of it is really good, parents should know, a couple of the stories' content was so heavy, that we have decided not to give it to our little girl now. Example: WWII prisoners of war story about a guard stepping forward to take blame for something he didn't do, and the guard killed him. Also, the image of a woman with dark brown skin standing up being auctioned off as a slave. (while I understand the historical reference this picture was trying to create, my children are bi-racial, and I'm not comfortable with introducing the history of US black/white relations in this way). I love Sally Lloyd Jones and the Jesus Story Book Bible, but didn't think it was appropriate for this age.

This book is basically written for children, but I'm no spring chicken and I read it cover-to-cover in one sitting and not only did it make my heart sing, it made my spirit soar! It is so well written, each page telling portions of the gospel with themes and ideas from biblical texts, and the verses arequoted as well. What a fabulous way to teach your kids or ANYONE for that matter, about God's love for us and what Christ has done for us.This book is for everyone, yet it's written in a way that children will love.

I bought this for my grandchildren, and decided I need it at least as much as they do!! So I purchased this wonderful book with whispersync narration by David Suchet and I love it :-) He has a very soothing voice but also speaks with conviction, as he is a true believer in Christ, not simply an actor reading a part. A joy to meditate on God's truth in this book. I would recommend this to anyone.

This is the perfect devotional to read to my two elementary kids (2nd & 4th grade) in the morning before school, even when we only have 5 minutes before we have to run out the door to meet the bus (usually we only have 5 min!). Then I'll read a page or two out loud to my middle schooler while he's eating his breakfast or putting on his shoes. Each page is a sure reminder of Who God is and Whose children we are, which truly makes your heart sing!

A beautiful book for all ages. Though this is a kid's book; we also enjoy it. It is inspirational and helps to put into words one's thoughts on God. The pictures are amazing. Our kids LOVE to have us read this to them and they also love to look at it on their own. This is a wonderful book to gift to a family!

This is such a lovely book with insightful thoughts about God. Although written for children, it made our adult hearts sing as well. The artwork in the book is excellent -- such a good pairing of ideas and visuals. Thank you so much for it.

Wonderful book. Got one for my grandchildren and have recommended it dozens of times! The brief stories build a foundation for a child's understanding of God's unconditional love. The Jesus Bible Storybook Bible by this author has been such a blessing to children. This book will be the same!

I love the way this author relates Biblical Truths in creative prose simply, but profoundly. If you are reading this book to a child, he/she will be blessed by the simplicity, and you, the reader, are sure to be equally blessed by the depth and insight in this book.

Just got this book and basically like it. I've been working with C++ since 1990s when Borland released their C++ IDE.One quibble is the explanation of inherited C features before presenting C++ replacements. I'd say the order should be reversed. Another is an initialization example of "int* x = nullptr;" which is correct but I'd prefer showing it as "int* x{};" which is shown a chapter or so later. Nothing wrong but these are like fingernails on a chalkboard. If you're a pro you'll gloss over these but newbies might be mislead.

I was little bit upset that author exclude chapter dedicated to inter process communication approaches, for example SOAP, XML RPC and other modern ones. In the 1st edition even CORBA was mentioned, but in this one nothing related to this important topic. Also quality of book paper would be better. But this only my first oppinion without any estimation of existent content of the book, because I had not enough time to red it.

Note: This is the fourth edition; the reviews here mix the different editions, which makes it harder for you to assess this one. Check the dates of the reviews. This book is written for folks who already know how to program, and is not an intro to programming in C++. It cautions as well that it's not even a book on learning C++ for programmers, although the first 70 pages will considerably help getting you up to speed. Included are heads-up for C programmers to note. In the ideal, C++ is a superset of C, meaning that any C program was also a C++ program, but over time that ideal has eroded, so it's good to know how to do things in a current version of C++. This book covers C++17, the version from 2017, so it's current.I think I might be in the target audience for this book, which is to say that I have written some small C++ programs in the past, but would like to become a good C++ programmer. This will be a bit of a journey and I'm just at the start of it (and it's a background/hobby thing for me), so I can't yet tell you that this book was great for me, but so far, I think it's just what I wanted.Source code for the examples in the book is available online, as mentioned at the end of the intro. If you search online for "Professional C++ 4th Edition", you can easily go to the wrox site and find a table of contents, and excerpts, which include the entirely of Chapter 1 (aka "Excerpt 2"). This will probably give you a good idea as to whether this book is for you. Also slightly tedious, but you can navigate to the available source code from this site. The book is currently number 350 in the alphabetical listing of available source code... Possibly better to follow the link at the end of the intro.

This is a very thick book - over 1,000 pages - not something you will want to read on the subway on your daily commute. But it's good stuff. Just what this old (66-years-old) programmer needed to brush up on my C++, especially features of the C++17 standard. I like the way it emphasizes use of the Standard Library. I personally enjoy reading it at my desk at work - I find the writing very accessible but that may be because (I think) I am probably the target market: experienced programmer with more than a little exposure to C++ but not capable of writing this book myself.

There are things to like about this book. She weighs in at 1100 pages and covers topics as diverse as software design to what a pointer is.In the end, I am not sure whom this book is targeted at, but at the same time, I am confident that if I could retain some portion of the 1100 pages of material, I would probably be well armed. So we've arrived at what I think the zen of C++ is, which is that it is aimed at too many interests--and this is not the fault of the author of this book. Logically it follows any book attempting to cover such diverse interests, must itself meander in its structure. One could say the book covers too much, or too little. These are matters of opinion.

Okey, I have read many programming language books and this is the first one that made me frustrated. The sequence is not well structured. It kept bringing up stuff from the future chapters and it kept you flipping between pages, and worse when you got on the page, you found that had no useful info. They are so redundant throughout the entire book.

This was a fascinating story about a fascinating individual. It wasn't always happy. Williams' life was certainly not always happy. While his childhood was miserable, his athletic career was brilliant. He was a reluctant - extremely reluctant - member of the Armed Forces. But, once in, he did a great job. The fans in Boston enjoyed a turbulent relationship with him after his rookie season. His relationships with his wives and girlfriends were never easy, nor were his relationships with his children. But, the author writes honestly about these and not in a patronizing manner. I loved this book, and was thrilled as I read it. Williams was the greatest pure hitter in baseball history. This is a definite read for any baseball fan.

Ted Williams was a tortured person, as this lengthy biography makes clear. But, oh my, what a hitter he was! The last player to hit .400. With a major league career that began in 1939, in 1957--at an advanced age for a player--he hit .388. If he had any legs left, he may well have hit .400 if he would have been able to get some "leg hits."The book accomplishes several worthy goals. First, it provides a big picture description and analysis of his baseball career--from the time when he first started playing until his retirement. It shows a growth as a player--from indifferent to playing defense to becoming a pretty decent outfielder. The book depicts his approach to hitting very nicely. It also shows the volatile side of him, when he would lose his temper, publicly get into painful disputes with reporters, sometimes not hustling when he would become angry with someone, and so on. And the ways he would "psyche" himself for a game. For instance, taking swings in the locker room, he would say: "I'm Teddy [expletive deleted] Ballgame of the Major [expletive deleted] Leagues. How can this pitcher get me out with his [expletive deleted] pitching" (I could not retrieve the exact quotation, but this is close]. The book has his batting statistics at the end (page 785), and that is helpful, to get a sense of the trajectory of his career.Second, it gives a glimpse of Williams as a person. Not always pretty. He was married a number of times and the end result was often unpleasant. He had numerous affairs, had a wicked temper. In short, he tended to treat his wives badly. While his children would say that he was a good father, he was often away. And his personality. . . . He was obviously someone with some emotional/mental problems. He would sometimes get discouraged easily; he would lash out at people; and so on.Third, it portrays his distressing state near the end of his life. Health problems came up. His son was manipulative and tried to develop a career and lots of income, and he was not above misusing his father. Perhaps most distressing, he wanted to "freeze" his father after death, rather than allowing Williams to be cremated as he had requested. The story is that Williams finally agreed, but the book certainly makes it appear that his son and a daughter manipulated him into the decision.A richly told tale of a larger than life figure, with larger than life problems, who was a larger than life baseball player.

Great book, very minutely researched biography. Had to buy it because i kept putting off reading for other books. Now I can read it at my leisure. He my favorite player and I am a Red Sox fan, and I really enjoyed this book. Also a great reference source as well as trying to determine how his behavior came about from diffucult childhood. Bright man, but difficult to those around him especially women and the Press.

I like to read in bed, and this book was so heavy that I cut it into three sections ... was afraid if I dropped the original on me I'd break a rib or lung or something ... but a terrific read ... DH

Bradlee took 10 years to complete this book, and it shows. After hundreds of interviews, he got the complete story of Ted Williams. This book pulls no punches. You'll get all the good stuff Ted did in his life, much of which he took pains to keep secret. You'll also get all the bad stuff in his life and maybe learn why it went that way. Ted was at the same time a loving, caring person who'd do anything for someone in need, even a complete stranger, yet could be the most profane and abusive person imaginable. One thing that's not open to debate and will be driven home in this book: Ted Williams was one of the best hitters ever to play the game of baseball. This book details the interactions between Ted and his family, friends, managers, teammates, and opponents. If The Kid doesn't get strong consideration for a Pulitzer, something is wrong. Great book!

Ted Williams ,my favorite Red Sox player Contains a plethora of information and does not need to be read all at once-easy to regain continuity as it is well written

This is a hardbound copy that is in excellent condition. Generous price for such a nice book. I will look to use this seller when I buy books from now on.

He was the most narcists person on this planet. Wife abuser and a real jerk to other humans.

I love bible story's I know it's fiction but it's great reading love the story of Esther this was a good story

Inspiring novel. Great book for those engaged or hitting a rough spot in their marriage

I absolutely LOVED ❤️❤️ it!! It actually used stories from history, and made them very interesting 😊😊. I loved the author(s) way of making the story ✏️✏️. My praise to you!! 👏👏

Mystery wrapped with history in this amazing story with animated descriptions that make one feel a part of the story. Fascinating characterization and yet allows one to imagine as it should. Amazing! I lived every minute of this book and wished it didn't have to end.

This the is follow-up to Hadassah: One Night with the King. Mr. Tenney spins an exotic tale that follows Hadassah through the ages and weaves biblical facts into modern-day politics, making for very enjoyable historical fiction.

Love the book. The first book HADASSAH "one night with the king" was really good as well. You really need to read the first book first .It hopes you understand the second book better.Tommy Tenney did a good job.

Interesting fictional account tying present day Hadassah with the Hadassah of Purim.

This is a great book. It draws the historical into modern day. I highly recommend this book. It is a good read.

Amazon.com Review

An Amazon Best Book of June 2017: I often have trouble staying engaged by literary novels starring characters separated by centuries. But The Weight of Ink hooked me so deeply that at no point did I want to wiggle free of this story of two historians investigating 300-year-old letters written in plague-ridden London by a young Jewish woman with a white-hot intellect and no acceptable outlet for it. British history professor Helen Watt immediately recognizes the historical value of a bundle of rabbi’s letters and books discovered behind the wall of an old house, and she recruits American graduate student Aaron Levy to help her with translations. Months from retirement, Helen hides her Parkinson’s disease, while Aaron struggles with his Shakespeare-focused thesis that’s going nowhere fast and with Helen’s curmudgeonly ways. But when Helen and Aaron realize that the rabbi’s letters were penned for him by a woman, not the typical male scribe, their historical significance skyrockets. As Helen and Aaron’s investigation accelerates, author Rachel Kadish plunges the reader into the smoggy, socially circumscribed world of Ester Velasquez in 17th-century London. A Jewish woman living in a community that doesn’t support thinking in females or speculation beyond the accepted dogma, Ester has survived much tragedy in her young life and now quietly but steadfastly refuses to be squashed further. As plague stalks London, Ester finds ways to let her intellectual passion free despite pressures to marry and be domesticated in mind and soul. Gorgeous writing that might, in isolation of the story, risk coming off as overwrought instead perfectly renders the strong emotions that run through Ester, Helen, and Aaron as they face down opponents and seize opportunities. Kadish, with storytelling genius, mirrors events and eureka moments across the centuries, binding the characters to one another. And an enormously satisfying ending wraps everything up while leaving enough rough edges to mimic the loose ends of real life. --Adrian Liang, The Amazon Book Review

Byatt's Possession, but with more seventeenth-century Judaism...A deeply moving novel." —New Republic “I gasped out loud…[Kadish has a ] mastery of language…[The Weight of Ink] was so powerful and visceral…Incredible…I haven’t been able to read a book since.” —Rose McGowan, New York Times Book Review Podcast   "Rachel Kadish’s novel The Weight of Ink is my top Jewish feminist literary pick. Kadish’s novel weaves a web of connections between Ester Velasquez, a Portuguese Jewish female scribe and philosopher living in London in the 1660s, and Helen Watt, a present-day aging historian who’s trying to preserve Ester’s voice even as she revisits her own repressed romantic plot.  Both Ester and Helen are part of a long literary line of what writer Rebecca Goldstein has termed 'mind-proud women.'"  —Lilith, "7 Jewish Feminist Highlights of 2017" "So many historical novels play with the 'across worlds and centuries trope,' but this one really delivers, tying characters and manuscripts together with deep assurance. A book to get lost in this summer." —Bethanne Patrick, LitHub "A page-turner. Kadish moves back and forth in time (including an excursion to Israel in the 1950s) with great skill. She knows how to generate suspense – and sympathy for her large cast of characters...packed with fascinating details...The Weight of Ink belongs to its women...Kadish’s most impressive achievement, it seems to me, lies in getting readers to think that maybe, just maybe, a woman like Esther could have existed in the Jewish diaspora circa 1660." —Jerusalem Post     "An amazing feat...A great literary and intellectual mystery...you feel as if you're sifting through these letters yourself...a very immersive summer read." —Megan Marshall, "Authors on Authors" for Radio Boston  "A superb and wonderfully imaginative reconstruction of the intellectual life of a Jewish woman in London during the time of the Great Plague."  —Times Higher Education  "An impressive achievement...The book offers a surprisingly taut and gripping storyline...The Weight of Ink has the brains of a scholar, the drive of a sleuth, and the soul of a lover." —Historical Novel Society  "Deeply satisfying to anyone who enjoyed Geraldine Brooks’ People of the Book...[The Weight of Ink is a] historical epic that transports readers back to the days of Shakespeare, Spinoza and the Great Plague, uncovering some rich details of Jewish life in the 1600s along the way." —Jewish World News "Kadish knows how to create a propulsive plot peopled with distinctive characters. The Weight of Ink has enough mysteries to keep readers turning pages, and a fair amount of thematic and intellectual heft...Rewarding." —The Forward "This astonishing third novel from Kadish introduces readers to the 17th-century Anglo-Jewish world with not only excellent scholarship but also fine storytelling. The riveting narrative and well-honed characters will earn a place in readers' hearts." —Library Journal, starred review “Like A.S. Byatt’s Possession and Tom Stoppard’s Arcadia, this emotionally rewarding novel follows […] present-day academics trying to make sense of a mystery from the past…Vivid and memorable.” —Publishers Weekly "A mysterious collection of papers hidden in a historic London home sends two scholars of Jewish history on an unforgettable quest....Kadish's characters are memorable, and we're treated to a host of them: pious rabbis and ribald actors, socialites and troubled young men, Mossad agents and rule-worshipping archivists. From Shakespeare's Dark Lady to Spinoza's philosophical heresies, Kadish leaves no stone unturned in this moving historical epic. Chock-full of rich detail and literary intrigue." —Kirkus Reviews  "Kadish positions two women born centuries apart yet united by a thirst for knowledge at the core of a richly textured, addictive novel stretching back and forth through time, from contemporary London to the late seventeenth century....Kadish has fashioned a suspenseful literary tale that serves as a compelling tribute to women across the centuries committed to living, breathing, and celebrating the life of the mind." —Booklist "The Weight of Ink hooked me so deeply...Kadish, with storytelling genius, mirrors events and eureka moments across the centuries, binding the characters to one another. And an enormously satisfying ending wraps everything up while leaving enough rough edges to mimic the loose ends of real life." —Adrian Liang, The Amazon Book Review “The Weight of Ink is the best kind of quest novel—full of suspense, surprises and characters we care passionately about.  How thrilling it is to watch the imperious Helen and the scholarly Aaron turn into brilliant literary detectives as they uncover the identity of a woman who lived more than 300 years ago, and how thrilling it is to get to know that woman intimately in her own time.  A beautiful, intelligent and utterly absorbing novel.” —Margot Livesey, author of Mercury "Rachel Kadish draws us deep inside the vivid, rarely-seen world of 17th century Jewish London, conjuring the life and legacy of an extraordinary woman with an insatiable hunger for knowledge and education. A vital testament to the importance of books and ideas, The Weight of Ink unfolds like a revelation.” —Kate Manning, author of My Notorious Life “From its opening pages The Weight of Ink signals its reverence for words, both those from which the narrative is constructed and those which lie at the heart of its story—for this a novel about the importance of words: written and spoken, historical and contemporary, hidden away and brought to light. Rachel Kadish has fashioned a literary mystery spanning centuries, continents and languages; a mystery of great moral stakes and elemental human desires.” —Leah Hager Cohen, author of No Book but the World "The Weight of Ink tells of the struggle and the triumph of a woman trying to do justice to the largeness of her intellect and ambition. As audacious in its conception as it is brilliant in its execution." —Rebecca Newberger Goldstein, author of Plato at the Googleplex: Why Philosophy Won't Go Away “Rarely have I read a contemporary novel that so immersed me in its world and drew me so deeply into the lives of its characters. Rachel Kadish is a brilliant story-teller, with a mystery writer's instinct for pacing and a willingness to take on the largest human questions. The Weight of Ink is astonishing.” —Carol Gilligan, author of In a Different Voice

#21,008 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

“The Weight of Ink” by Rachel Kadish lives up to its title in many ways. At 560 tightly-written pages of magnificent prose, this novel can under no circumstances be called “light reading”. Indeed, the only reason I was able to complete it despite the protest of my arthritic hands and aging eyes was because it is unquestionably absolutely enthralling to a person with my specific interests. Those interests include theology and the incredible injustices which dogma-driven society has perpetrated against women, homosexuals, Jews, and others. This book touches on all these aspects, and many more. As the plot summary indicates, Helen Watt, an aging British historian and expert in Jewish studies, is invited by a former student to assist in the evaluation of some manuscripts found during the renovation of a house in a London suburb. Helen, suffering from Parkinson Disease, needs help in studying what she realizes is a treasure-trove of documents, and calls upon a colleague to recommend a post-graduate student to assist. Enter Aaron Levy, a young American secular Jew who has run into a roadblock on his own research attempting to find a “Jewish Connection” in the writings Shakespeare. Helen and Aaron find their collaboration both uneasy and deeply rewarding.Further dramatic tension is provided by the fact that Helen’s ploy of having the college (from which she is about to retire) acquire the documents for conservation and archiving immediately raises the specter of academic competitiveness. It soon becomes obvious that the papers include the writing of Ester Velasquez, the ward of the blind Rabbi Moseh HaCoen Mendes, a Portuguese Jew. Having fled Portugal for the relative safety of Amsterdam after the Inquisition killed his parents and blinded him, Rabbi Mendes has been sent to London to try to assist the struggling Jewish community there. The existence of a female scribe writing in 17th Century London just before plague and then fire decimated the city is remarkable enough. However, as Helen and Aaron continue to delve into Ester’s writings an incredible back-story emerges. This woman was not only a scribe, but a philosopher as well, determined to connect with some of the great – and, in the opinion of most other people of that era heretical – thinkers of her time. As the story weaves back and forth between Ester’s traumas and those of Helen and Aaron as they seek to discover the reality of who this woman was and what she really represented (before being “scooped” by other investigators), great depth and richness of thought evolves. As mentioned in my opening comments, this is not a book I could recommend to someone seeking light or trivial reading. However, it is profound, fascinating and deeply engaging for anyone who is concerned with the fundamental issues Rachel Kadish so brilliantly addresses through the words and thoughts of her extraordinary characters.

This is a beautiful, complex, engrossing, and engaging novel that is more than worth the time it takes to read it. The best part of "The Weight of Ink" is that it doesn't sacrifice readability or character development for the sake of the story, which takes place in both the 1990's and the 1660's. I'm finding that a lot of recent novels that take place in different eras in history try and "mold" their narrative style so they sound like they were either written in that time period or somehow evocative of that time period, and in doing so they turn the book into one long "accent", sacrificing readability for style.Rachel Kadish did none of that- she managed to weave an engrossing story with rich, compelling characters that come to life on the page. And the fact that this is a 576 page novel about documents and correspondence between rabbis and remains more of a page turner than any recent "thriller" is not lost on me.The basic plot: Helen is an aging historian, and near the end of her academic career she's called out to the home of one of her students, after he's unearthed a trove of historical documents during a renovation. Aaron, an American graduate student who is finding his dissertation to be a dead end, is tasked to help her. What they found- and the implications of it- astound them both. Through Kadish's skillful writing, the reader is effortlessly shifted between the worlds of both Helen and Aaron's situations in modern-day London, Israel in the 1960's, London in the 1660's and the characters that inhabit all these worlds.I cannot recommend this novel enough. It's beautifully written, a pleasure to read, and the kind of book that keeps you invested from the first page to the last.

There are long passages in this book, letters written by Ester to the philosophers of her day, in contemplation of the likely impossibility of the existence of God. At one point, Aaron Levy, the present-day scholar, wonders if he is even able to understand her missives. And this is my problem with this good book. The writing was beautiful, but dense and often cryptic; I sometimes had trouble understanding it, and many of the letters and scenes went on for too long. And yet I highlighted 27 excerpts, whether for the beauty of the writing or its resonance. On the very first page, describing Helen Watt: "Hope against reason: an opiate she'd long abandoned." What great characterization. As was the subtle yet plainspoken paragraph alerting us that Watt is very ill. The writing was so beautiful at times, I read it aloud to my husband, savoring the work of a true craftsman. The story progresses along three lines: that of Ester Velasquez, who lives in London, c. 1660; and of the modern-day scholars Watt and Levy. One theme of the book could be "how will you use your life? Will you live it fully or squander it?"-- in self-containment (Watt); the cowardice of the late-maturer (Levy); or by accepting cultural repression of women (Velasquez). As Levy learns about Velasquez having to hide her intellect, and the degree to which she suffers isolation because of her mind, his understanding grows in regard to the woman he loves, and women in general. This is a coming-of-age story. Levy is twenty five, beautiful, gifted with women, and stuck. He's unhappy and unsure of himself.Watt, gravely ill but persevering at the unlocking of the mystery of Ester, also examines her own life, with a lengthy flashback to when she was a young woman in love. Her fear of that love shaped her entire life, and it's only at the end and through her work with Levy that she achieves clarity in this regard. So, good character arcs, incredibly rich historical details, lots of good in this book, but overall, too long, opaque, and subtle for me. My apologies to the author, who must be a gifted scholar herself to have completed this work.

There are so many genres of Japanese comics that it doesn't come as a surprise that there's a series dedicated to teaching subjects that are normally taught in schools. The Manga Guide to Physics is a great introduction to physics. It has a very simple but entertaining storyline, one about the lead Megumi trying to learn physics so that she can defeat her opponent in a tennis match. Compared to thick physics textbooks, it's certainly a more interesting way to learn physics. The different concepts of physics are explained and illustrated by using real life examples. You get to learn about how forces work in a tennis match, the safety distance to keep while driving a car, how to get yourself back to the space shuttle using just a wrench, etc. The situations are not too complex, but always towards explaining a certain concept, and does so effectively. There are four chapters, namely Law of Action and Reaction, Force and Motion, Momentum and Energy. The content is presented one part in manga format, and after each chapter a summary which is more technical in text format with diagrams. This is a helpful and engaging teaching tool, one that successfully tackles a seemingly intimidating and dense subject as physics. I showed the book to my colleague who used to be a physics teacher and he was very impressed. This book is highly recommended to anyone interested in learning physics.-No Starch Press, the publisher, also offers a PDF version of the book for sale on their website.

My school's physics teacher actually recommended this book to me! I was too intimidated by physics, as a subject, to actually take the class(es) he was teaching, but I sought him out quite a lot to ask him questions and get clarification on things that I was trying to learn on my own. Apparently, I did this enough that, finally, he showed me this book and recommended I read it for myself. He said it was super helpful for both people beginning to study physics and people needing a refresher. He's actually assigned it as summer reading for his kids over the summer.Having finished it quite a while ago, I have to say, its main priority is definitely teaching physics, rather than plot. I'd say a good 85% of the pages are largely devoid of actual, anime drawings and dedicated mostly to long equations, math work, and explanations of basic physical concepts and the more advanced mathematics. This is frustrating because, sometimes, all you want to do is get back to the anime drawings so your brain can take a break from what feels a bit like reading a textbook; other times, though, it's really helpful to have the topics that were briefly introduced during the anime-drawing, plot-heavy part of the book explained in more depth.Overall, I'd say this book is tons more fun than a textbook! There's absolutely no doubt about that. Happily, I also don't think your sacrificing much--if any--of the educational quality you might get from a textbook. I mean, this book covers some serious physics, but it balances that heavy-duty, headache-inducing material with fun, light-hearted plot points and humor.Bravo, guys. I'm really grateful for this book.

Good for high school students, or college students who want a review. I wouldn't try to learn straight from this book only. I used it to supplement my college physics course. It mostly helped me understand concepts, not how to do the actual math required. You would certainly need to also read the textbook. I would go for a Schaum's book if you just need math help. This book has a little manga style story as well, to motivate the progression. I liked that.

Aced my forces/impulse test! I love physics, and this was a cute and super fun way to review what I learned from class. I admit that there are some, to my chagrin, gratuitous drawings of the rival character. In addition, I definitely don't recommend using this if you don't know anything about or haven't taken or studied physics before. That will overcomplicate everything. This book is:- Cute- Enjoyable to read- Simple real-life applications used as examples- Accurate (Most of its content was what we learned in class.)It's relatively memorable and very helpful. In fact, I had a quiz on impulse and there was (BEHOLD!) a question about applying force to a tennis raquet. I immediately thought of Megu trying to "follow through" when she returned the ball so she could increase impulse. And yes, I did get the question right! ;D

When I was a college student I read the Manga Guide to Databases for funsies. Since then I own almost every Manga Guide that have ever been published. They are written much like an edutainment tv show, with simplistic story/characters to put more emphasis on the lessons. Each book typically follows a young, school aged boy or girl. Be warned if your teen think they're "too cool for school" or "too old for comics", they probably will not think kindly of this gift. The concepts are understandable within the comic in most cases. If not, each chapter ends with a text-only lesson guide that summarizes. Often the text goes into greater depth/detail than the comic itself.Physics itself requires a certain level of prior mathematical understanding (around Pre-Calculus or above). I would recommend this for high school level or above. Even better is if the reader is taking physics that year, it can supplement their learning. I never had the opportunity to take Physics until college, but even still I found the class and the book enjoyable.
