I read the korean translation of this book and though I disagree on the author's view in many aspects, I find this book really interesting as well as informative. So I decided to buy the english version of it. Not being american, I can't understand how americans manage to live in their healthcare system. Some radical arguments of the author are surely hard to struggle against.

Richard Allen Epstein (born 1943) is a Professor of Law at the New York University School of Law, as well as associated with the Cato Institute, the Hoover Institution, and the Heartland Institute. He has written meny books, including Takings: Private Property and the Power of Eminent Domain,Why Progressive Institutions are Unsustainable (Encounter Broadsides),Design for Liberty: Private Property, Public Administration, and the Rule of Law, etc.He wrote in the Preface to this 1997 book, "This book represents my sustained effort to demonstrate that the source of our collective anxiety begins with the elaborate and counterproductive schemes of entitlements that live off the illusion of abundance of scarcity. It deals first with the grand question of health care... Alas, this book is not rich in quick fixes for intractable problems."He begins by stating, "The central thesis of this book is that the rules of the game as have just been laid out are more likely to lead to a sensible regime for the reform and regulation of health care than the dominant regime." (Pg. 19-20) He adds, "I think that the strongest theoretical argument in favor of a welfare right in health care, or anywhere else, is one that exploits the wedge between maximizing social wealth and maximizing utility." (Pg. 31)He suggests that "No political system will be able to turn people away once the coverage is made universal." (Pg. 55) Rejecting the notion that "everyone has a right to health care regardless of ability to pay," he asks, "Why is this principle appropriate for health care when it has been rejected for vacation homes and fast cars?" (Pg. 112)He argues that "Pay or play plans invite strategic maneuvering by employers... Employers with healthy work forces will choose to insure, so all the bad risk accounts are dumped into the public sector with insufficient funds to service them. The single-payer system prevents this strategy, but it invites abuse by a government monopoly that can stifle innovation, squeeze individual physicians, and operate in a slow and arbitrary way." (Pg. 188)He concludes with the suggestion, "perhaps we might be better off in a world with reduced costs and enhanced access, even if liability is sharply curtailed or totally eliminated... we need open markets, with fully enforceable contracts, no ifs, ands, or buts, to find the best levels of legal protection against adverse medical outcomes." (Pg. 416)Thought-provoking and controversial as are all of Epstein's books, this one is well worth reading, particularly given the renewed importance of health care in the current political debate.

A fiercely libertarian roommate of mine gave me this book to read, and I was pleasantly surprised to discover that it was about more than health care. The beginning is actually a good primer on common law, and an effective encapsulation of the philosophical foundations of libertarian thought. Epstein effectively cuts through the platitudes that have been shaping decades of largely ineffective government policy-the sanctity of every single human life, for example-and explains how accepting these commonplaces can lead to results that are worse for everyone.The section dealing with common law mostly discusses the distinction between positive rights and negative rights. Positive rights are those that grant a people the right TO something: liberty, for example, or the right to a decent standard of living. Negative rights give the people the right NOT to have something happen to them: infringement on their person or property, or unfair treatment by another party. Far from being a small semantic distinction (I'm sure all of us can think of how most laws could be stated in either positive or negative form) Epstein shows how positive rights are much harder to enforce, and generally lead to a variety of perverse consequences when we try. The rest of the book-dealing with the Clinton health care proposal, for example-has dated, but is worth reading for the application of these ideas.Epstein writes an elegant but dry sentence, with occasional jargon, and except for the times when he gets passionate, the book moves along at a stately plod: I had to reread several sections to make sure I understood them. But he is clear, and avoids the most intolerable feature of many libertarian thinkers: intellectual smugness. He understands that government welfare policies are generally motivated by noble impulses, and that the way to convince people isn't to jump around doing the I'm-so-smart dance, but to illustrate the difficulties of turning a moral imperative into a government edict.The part of the book I had the most trouble with was that dealing with charity. Epstein points out that private charity was doing an excellent job before the government stepped in and took the responsibility off the shoulders of the individual, who now felt (often) that he had done his part just by paying his taxes. In other sections, however, Epstein maintains that having government welfare discourages people from taking care of their own health, because they now realize that they have a safety net.Now, I don't understand how a government safety net would discourage people from doing this any more than a private safety net. Epstein could argue that a safety net based on private charity would be more selective, but in my experience this isn't true: a church asks fewer questions than the government. The biggest problem with Epstein's argument is that, if taken to its logical conclusion, it's opposed to the idea of any effective charity at all: anything that tells people that they have help if something bad happens to them will, to some extent, discourage them from trying as hard as possible to avoid that catastrophe.And not only charity, actually: this idea is technically opposed to the idea of many kinds of medical treatment. Doesn't the existence of angioplasty make people less worried about watching their weight, in the same way that the effectiveness of AIDS medication has made people less worried about contracting HIV? But I hardly think that anyone would want to stop research in these areas, even though the illness is - in most cases -the "fault" of the patient.Now, a world where everyone is completely responsible for his or her own lack of foresight might be better than the world we live in, but I doubt that many of us would be confident enough in our own judgment to opt for it - which is probably why we leave it up to the government, despite the usual results.

This might be a valuable book to read for someone who is involved in working towards the right to health care, as well as for opponents of all economic and social rights. The book's great weakness and dishonesty lie in omission of the relevant context of the author's opposition to all social systems of care (police and fire departments, public education, libraries etc.). This is a very detailed book on ethics in a Christian way. Definitely impactful while I read it for class, but I'm not sure I remember much of it as it was pretty esoteric.

This book is an amazing text, that digs deeply into how to view and handle ethics from a Christian perspective. I bought it for a class text. However I would buy it for casual reading as well it's very benificial and practical for the modern day Christian trying to find the balance for ethics in the business world and personal life as well. Love it!!

I used this book in a recent course on Christian Ethics. It was a required reading, so whether I wanted to or not, I had to. It was not a bad experience for me at all. On the contrary, I learnt a lot.

I found this book very good at bringing out the Christian way at looking into morality. This book does not make the choices black and white but brings them into what people face.

Ethics is one of those areas of study that some find subjective, and they truly can be when it comes to social ethics and other areas of ethics. However, when it comes to Christian ethics, it is an entirely different story. The difference between Christian ethics and all other areas of ethics is only one of the many things that Hollinger lays out in this book. I would recommend this book for anyone who is interested in learning more about ethics.

This book is an excellent primer on the history of ethics and how to work through ethical issues as a Christian. I wish there would have been some more concrete direction, but I guess I shouldn't have expected this from a book on something as complex and nuanced as Christian ethics.

Playing House in Provence is some 200 pages of sustainable adventure and entertainment, seasoned with historical references as delicious as the author's Tarte aux Tomates. The reader is tickled, cajoled and tantalized through four animated journeys into past and present Provence, cobbled together by a first-rate wordsmith.There are elegant musings throughout; one of my favorites describes vintage ads (painted on ancient plaster walls) that are "bleached by the sun, abraded by winds and time, their colors retreat into the walls, leaving a beguiling penumbra of their former practical selves."Of course, being a career humorist, Ms. Weisman wastes no opportunity to play with words:"Be it ever so humble, there's no place like somewhere else" is her validation for attending festivals in Provence while snubbing them in America;"First we try ear plugs, then we move to gateway drugs" for dealing with the never-ending bells of Goult's church;"Coming from a country where Alcatraz is a national historic landmark, we long for the legitimacy of antiquity" found in Provence;"Little Endorphin Annie," a sobriquet for the exercise-obsessed author;"Insistent living" for assisted living;"We don't like tours, we listen in on yours" without having to pay the fare.Ms. Weisman has added another exceptionally smart and funny book to her repertoire. Thanks to her, I have crossed Provence off my bucket list without having to pay the fare.

I can't think of too many writers other than, say, Nora Ephron and David Sedaris whose essays are not only gracefully written but consistently insightful and laugh-out-loud funny. But as Mary-Lou Weisman impressively demonstrates in page after page of "Playing House in Provence", she is clearly a member of that elite circle.It would be hard for me name my favorite of the 36 essays that collectively provide a “from-the-inside-look” at what it's like to be an American trying to become a little French. But a strong candidate would be “Never Try to Act Out a 'Sausage", Ms. Weisman's hilarious account of the "nightmare of incomprehension" that she and her husband Larry experienced the first time they went shopping in a French supermarket.And here's a taste of the dozens of Ms. Weisman’s wry and often self-deprecating digressions that brought either a smile to my face or a nod of recognition on almost every other page:"I suffer from a fear of finding. Although I have never been in a paper bag, it is likely that I could not find my way out of one.""I was pretty sure the man I was asking for directions was French: I couldn't fit into his shirt.""Our neighbor is a human sundial who loves to sit outside his house, moving his chair incrementally to follow the light.""A Turkish toilet is not a facility that invites reading or crossword puzzling."Looking for more of the same? I don't remember ever laughing out loud at a travel memoir until Playing House in Provence . After toying with the idea for years, Mary-Lou Weisman and her husband Larry decide to rent a house for a month in a little village called L'Isle sur la Sorgue. They sign up to improve their French ("Immersion Totale") and begin to imagine themselves already becoming "a little bit French." They make progress. After drinking a mild Provencal rose throughout a meal, Mary-Lou observes that "In Vino we find not Veritas but a soupçon of uninhibited fluency." Mary-Lou bakes a Tarte aux Tomatoes after a new friend assures her that "real French women" unroll their crusts from Pillsbury. Larry makes joues de porc (pork cheeks) with advice from the butcher and suggestions from his customers who are more eager to help than place their own orders.That first month leads to three more stays in medieval Provencal villages and I wish there had been more. I cheered them on for their successes and felt their frustration at the French phrase that just wouldn't come or the faucet that shot two streams of water directly into their faces in that charming but antique kitchen. I bet you would do the same. This is writing with wit and insight and just so much fun to read.

Sunny Provence, markets, wine, beautiful villages and rental houses with various problems, eccentric neighbors--in one sense, this book fits neatly into the sort of travel memoir that has become so familiar since Peter Mayle's book years ago. On that level, it succeeds perfectly well. But what makes this book special is Weisman's voice. She's incredibly funny--I laughed out loud at a number of passages--but she's also very honest and introspective, and I think that's what I appreciated most. This is a great book for anyone who has ever tried to learn French (or might be thinking about it); it's also a great book for anyone who has ever thought maybe the life they were living wasn't the one they ought to be. I suspect that includes most of us.

I never give five stars to a book where I've met the author, in case people think I'm doing the writer a favor. But in this case, I have to admit that I laughed out loud several times as I travelled through Provence (on the page) with Mary-Lou and her husband. Her shrewd and honest eye on the world is also turned on her own foibles every so often, which makes for a good read. I read it on an autumn afternoon, and reluctantly put it down whenever I had to return to the real world. Perfect, and cheering, escape.

About the Author

In 1989, Jim Weiss set out on a mission: to record the greatest stories he knew from world literature and history, and inspire families -- especially young listeners -- with a passionate love of the original classics. In the three decades since then, Jim's narration voice and seemingly numberless character voices have formed foundational entertainment and education for millions of listeners around the world. I bought this book because, like so many other samples I have downloaded, it started off so well. It was interesting and well written. But once on the hook for the price of the book, it was all downhill. It’s like the author and her editor just stopped trying.Unending chapters full of tedious paragraphs full of rhetorical questions to herself? No thanks. Big mystery with a shocking reveal? Nope. None of the results she gets from dna tests are even remotely shocking or interesting. The blurbs for this book are very misleading. Don’t waste your money.

I liked this book very much. Alex’s personality shines through nicely, it’s a fun, nerdy wit. I agree with some of the other reviewers that there isn’t a big “a-ha” revelatory moment, but that is also the point. We do identify and identify with race, but the conclusions we may draw from anything we go out looking for may fall flat, whether it’s delving into history books, or getting shaky science DNA tests.We are all on earth biding time till death, it’s a personal journey, whatever we are to make of it, whatever history we want to tie ourselves to, whatever history we want to make for ourselves, it’s up to us.I like the idea another reviewer had, that Alex could go on to become a Burmese historian, there is a lot of unknown there. Definitely a lot of work!

Everybody should read this. A bracing corrective to all the artificial divisions so many of us have erected, and for what?

It’s a story about finding yourself in America. Looking back at the past and realizing that you’re, instead, in the present and the future.Honestly, didn’t find it too insightful. I didn’t really care to read her adventures through archives and continents, but I stuck through it and found her quiet acceptance of being American and metropolitan. Okay. Sure, I guess.Read it because Obama said it was “a thoughtful, beautiful meditation on what makes us who we are and the values and ideals that bind us together as Americans.” I found it more a rambling book about research methods, she’s grasping for more and there’s nothing there. Nonetheless, she talks about things I’ve been thinking about recently, and her prose is good.

Our search for roots takes us deep into the history of the world. I found myself fascinated by Burmese nationalism and the Franco-Prussian War as these things affected everyday citizens. A Howard Zinn way of looking at history. And the delve into the science behind DNA testing was helpful. Most of all I like her conclusions as she answers the questions “Who are we? To whom do we belong?”

Seemed to me that she reviewed the same stories again and again. It was a slow read. But an interesting topic.
