The story and descriptions made you feel as if you were there. I do not live where it snows, so the descriptions of the coldness made me glad that I live in southern California. Looking forward to reading Book 3.

One of my favorite reads. The main character is beautifully portrayed in a historical Japanese venue. The writing is superlative and creates detailed scenes easily envisioned. Best of all, though this is part of a series of books, each stands well on it's own. Try a sample; I'm sure you'll want to read all of it.

This is the second book in the Tales of the Otori series by Lian Hearn. This book picks up where the first left off. Takeo leaves Kaede for training under the mysterious Tribe; whose supernatural abilities Takeo has inherited from his father. As his training concludes, and he is asked to take out certain missions, he must ask himself if his loyalties will lie with the Tribe or with the Otori? Kaede meanwhile is left on her own to return home and see what state her family is in. Kaede struggles to consolidate her power and claim the inheritance she was left in a world that is run by men.This was a fitting second book for this series. It moved along at the steady, descriptive pace of the second book. Although for some reason I found myself getting bored while reading this book. The lush descriptions, while detailed, didn't bring the book to life in the way I hoped they would. I had a little trouble understanding some of the stupid decisions made by Kaede and Takeo along the way. Despite these misgivings, if you liked the first book you must read the second book. It is very much in the same style of the first book and continues the story of Kaede and Takeo. This book definitely builds to a climax preparing you for the war and conflict of the third novel.

Meanwhile, Shirakawa Kaede must try to unify the domain she has inherited, while fighting off would-be suitors and hoping that Takeo will return to her."MY FEEDBACK:1) You don't really need to read the first book to understand this story because the author does enough reflection and backstory to get a reader up to speed. BUT...it is so much better if you do read Across the Nightingale Floor first.2) The characters of Takeo and Kaede are explored more and we as readers continue our bond and love for them. Kaede plays a much larger role in this book than the first.3) This second/middle book doesn't seem to suffer from middle-book syndrome but continues with the same strength as the first. The first book resolved enough without having to read this book, but this book definitely sets the stage for interesting events to happen in the 3rd book.Very little is resolved in this book. This book was truly the rising action of the series making you feel that the climax is just around the corner and me as a reader anxious to get there.4) The same actors come back to this book to do the voices in this unabridged representation of the book. The acting is very well done and enjoyable throughout.OVERALL: Fantastic continuation. I can't wait till the end of the trilogy!

Grass for His Pillow is the continuation of the Tales of the Otori series about young Takeo. This book resumes where Book One, Across the Nightingale Floor ends. Thankfully, the story continues. The vivid descriptions, the mental portrayal of the scenery in which young Takeo & the heroine, Lady Kaede Shirakawa, find themselves, is vibrant and real. Lian Hearn takes a known world (Japan) and crafts another world just like it in which to set his story. There are many wonderful moments in this story and to tell them here would only lessen the experience. If you love detailed, well worded and unique character portrayal, please enjoy this title today!

I thought this suffered a little from "middle of the trilogy" syndrome. Dramatic events occurred in the first book, along with the introduction of many interesting characters. Here we seem to be in a bit of a holding pattern while everyone catches his breath and waits for the finale.Part of it was due to the overall intended atmosphere of the book. It is winter and everything slows to a halt--with only plans being made for when the snow clears and major campaigns can now be fought. Part is due to the mysterious Tribe--Takeo is amongst them, but only interacts with a few lower-members, whose relationships with him don't change much. And surprisingly little is revealed about them--save that what we have guessed or learned from the first book. I wanted a bit more of a climatic arc to be had with that part of the story, but it was not to be.However, the world remains beautifully, even sublimely rendered. And there is that subtle tension that underlies the events, which pulls the reader along. I greatly enjoyed the first book and am content with this, the second book, and wait eagerly for the conclusion to this compelling tale.

At this point, I've read all five of these books: the TALES OF THE OTORI trilogy as well as its epilogue and prequel. I read them contiguously and without pause--making sure that, before I finished one book, I had the next in hand. I would recommend the OTORI series for anyone who 1) has a modicum of interest in Japan, 2) likes a breath of magic, 3) enjoys surprise, 4) looks for the quality of nobility in characters, and 5) loves a good read. What's not to like!

This second book starts slow, like breathing in preparation for meditation but it abruptly ends. It left me yearning for more of Hearn's beautiful and tragic narration of love lost and found. I couldn't help but think that the amazing and most terrible moments of Kaede and Takeo's journey are all packed in book three.

The Classical era and the Stoic ideals that pervaded the times were, to be sure, the closest (at least as far as the Western World is concerned) mankind has ever approached to true excellence: excellence in practical and non-hypocritical morality (of course human nature is very fallible, and scourge of cruelty and hypocrisy are plentiful in all ages, but overall and in relation to other epochs), courage, selflessness, true justice (not just mouthing fine ideals in courts of law or houses of congress, but a true and deliberate attempt to improve the affairs of society where ALL were accountable for their actions, not simply the weak and defenseless, unlike some "other" ages!), indefatigable zeal in rooting out corruption, endurance of pain and hardship, etc. etc. Out of all of them, Seneca (particularly his treatises on "Firmness" and "Providence") is perhaps the most inspiring of all, and serve, at least for myself, as a great antidote to the exposures to bitterness, selfishness, lack of compassion, sorrow and misery that abound in today's age (not to mention the ravenous obsession with materialism, something the Stoics vehemently spoke out against). This collection is absolutely fantastic, and if only a small but dedicated minority of people would take up the Stoic cause once again, I have absolutely no doubt whatsoever our world would be a much, much better place for each and every person (well, maybe not for the crooks who love the status quo!). An incredible collection that is one of the highest (maybe THE highest) quality translations I have encountered at a price that can't be beat. My only complaint is that there is even an option of less than 5 stars in rating it!

I did not read it all, but referenced many sections regarding specific topics or Philosophical concepts. It is worth having for reference.

Seneca had a great mind, I really like the bit about the firmness of the wiseman, so inspiring.funny how thousands of years changes nothing.

It doesn't feel like this book has been edited very well at all. Sentences or phrases are often repeated with slightly different wording multiple times. Most of the topics described end up being much too verbose for the low amount of detail it actually gives you. Honestly this is the first book in a long time which I was actually frustrated to read because of how poorly it has been put together.

The book covers a lot of stuff. Quite simple in some chapters. Others are pretty technical. It is OK but overpriced. Maybe $1 would be better.

While reading this book I got the impression it had been poorly translated from a foreign language and that it had not been properly edited. However the notes about the author state that he lives in New York. Weird. Do yourself a favor and look for a more understandable and better-written book.

He offers advice on how to interact with your partner and overcome hangups that prevent us from being geniuses in bed! Get over it and celebrate your sexuality!

This book really changes the thought of how to feel or act sexually towards your partner by facing insecurities through communication, accepting your age and working through uncomfortable thoughts for a better sexual you. I also gave it to a friend and it saved his marriage of 40 years! He swears by it too!

Interesting and Excellent. There may be well satisfied and adjusted, and intelligent people who have ultimate sexual practice, but my guess is there are many who wish it was easier to do and communicate. Relaxing into great sex as an older man with medical problems who can talk about anything without being upset with a partner who is happy and can do the same is a beautiful conscept. Sex changes as life goes on, but it can always be beautiful if we are free to talk about it when a problem arises and also not talk about it if there is no need. We always seem to have something lurking in the background in our subconscious or cultural conditioning. Once we understand ourselves and each other, communication is good at any level, sexual or otherwise. It requires listening, patience, intelligence, and true compassion. That is what the world needs now. This book is about all of the above, and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Marty Klein really expanded my thinking around sex and relationships. He explains how the body works, like how your spine delivers emotions, and how that impacts your sex and your life. And even though I've read that before, his brilliant ease with words transformed that insight into an epiphany. Really, he takes a lot of the pressure off sex by showing the ways we've added pressure to something that only has the meaning we decide to give it. So this book truly lives up to its title and promise of sexual intelligence. I highly recommend this book, even if you've read tons of them on sex and relationships. Definitely a fresh, brilliant voice on the topic and I'm looking forward to the Beyond Orgasm book.

This book seems like common sense when reading it, but it completely breaks down all the stress, shame, tensions, etc that tends to follow sex around. This is a great book for anyone who has any kind of negative feelings around sex or is not enjoying sex. It puts sex in its proper place in our lives and gives it the importance it deserves. Dr. Klein, at the same time, takes apart the importance we place on sex and puts it in a place where it can be just as important as we think it should be, just in a very different light. Highly recommended! I heard about this book on the Savage Lovecast btw. Thanks Dan and Dr. Klein.

I love this book. It is a book for all ages and for all couples. The author’s sense of humor is perfect. Light reading but full of truths - accept who you are and your body the way it is! Be yourself, communicate clearly and move on.

Thoughtful, often humorous and dead on... Marty Klein says it how it is and puts to bed many a myth about healthy sex. Sex is what we make it, for better or worse. Modern media has, in many cases poisoned the well and taken from people the sweet elixir of eternal youth. This book will put you on the right track to healthy and happy sex for the rest of your life.

I am a relationship therapist myself and have used Marty Klein's ideas and concepts relating to sex and sexuality with many of my individual clients and couples. I highly recommend this book for anyone wanting a greater understanding of sexuality and relationships.

As a beginning tatter, I found the designs easy to read and follow. The two angels, in particular, came out very nice. I've also tatted several of the snowflakes.

I should have done more research before ordering this. Book is fine, came quickly, but it's for SHUTTLE tatting, and I am trying to learn NEEDLE tatting. Some parts of the instructions do not work for needle tatting.

This is an excellent book for beginners and more advanced tatters as well. I am relatively new at tatting and found most of the patterns easy to follow. I love the bell patterns!

It's hard to stay with the pattern. I think the designs are super but the layout of instructions reads like a book. I like instructions laid out in 1. 2. 3 format. I will probably rewrite them so they are easier to read and keep up with my place.

Jack Moehle, Ph.D., is the T.Y. and Margaret Lin Professor of Engineering in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of California, Berkeley. He was founding director of the Pacific Earthquake Engineering Research Center. Dr. Moehle played a leading role on several teams to develop professional guidance and design standards, including Improved Seismic Design Guidelines for California Highway Bridges (ATC 32); Guidelines for Evaluation and Repair of Masonry and Concrete Walls (FEMA 306); Guidelines for Seismic Rehabilitation of Buildings (FEMA 273); Development of Next-Generation Performance-Based Seismic Design Procedures for New and Existing Buildings (FEMA P-58); and Guidelines for Performance-Based Seismic Design of Tall Buildings (Tall Buildings Initiative, PEER). He is a Fellow of the American Concrete Institute, an Honorary Member of the Structural Engineers Association of California, and an elected Member of the National Academy of Engineering. Dr. Moehle chaired the seismic provisions subcommittee of the ACI 318 Building Code Committee from 1995 to 2014, and is the chair of the ACI 318 Building Code Committee for the 2014-2020 code cycle.

This is the best book on the subject. Dr. Moehle is the current chair of ACI 318, and at the time of the writing of the book was in charge of ACI 318 H, the group charged with the seismic provisions. The only negatives is that the book is not provided to all engineers as mandatory reading for concrete seismic design.

I think this is the best book about the subject. Very well written and interesting. The author exposes the new knowledge about the behavior of reinforced concrete subjected to earthquake solicitation.

This is the best book in the field of seismic reinforced concrete design since the the Park and Paulay's book was published.
