About the Author

Born 9 September 1979, West Midlands, Ian Phillips had his first book published on Diana Ross in 2010. I read this book as part of the book club I run for fans of the My Favorite Murder podcast. This was our non-fiction selection for the month of January. Some people who started reading the book before me complained that book jumping around in time made for a confusing read. Perhaps the advance warning helped because I did not find the time jumps confusing at all. I was also concerned that the premise of a time traveling serial killer would wind up being silly but Lauren Beukes book is a gripping, fast paced read that never feels ridiculous despite its far fetched plot.Harper Curtis is a serial killer who stumbles onto an abandoned house that opens into other times. Using clues from the house, Harper insinuates himself into the lives of pre-selected girls who "shine" at different periods in modern history. He visits them in their childhood, promising he will visit them later. When he does visit them in adulthood, he murders them brutally. Unbeknownst to him, Kirby Mizrachi, one of his "Shining Girls" survives and is determined to find the man who nearly killed her. Kirby teams up with former Homicide reporter Dan Valesquez to solve the case that has left police baffled.One thing I really appreciated about this book is that (Possible spoiler?) at no point were there any great leaps of logic on the part of the investigators. Even when the evidence starts to mount, the theory seems fantastical. Additionally, Kirby has done her homework on serial killers. Watching her try to apply clinical criteria that won't fit together is equal parts satisfying and frustrating (satisfyingly frustrating?) because she's smart and she *should* be right but she isn't because the reality is so unreal. The only reason I can't give it a full five stars is that I'm not entirely sure if I like the ending. However, The Shining Girls is a nice addition to serial killer crime fiction that never feels stale or tired.

I was recommended this book, with an indication that I shouldn't look into what it's about too much, I should just read it and enjoy it. I love the 1930s, and the concept of the time travelling killer driven by a strange force to kill the 'shining girls' seemed dark and interesting.I think, with the time travel element, and the sentient house element, I mistook it for a work of speculative fiction. It's not. It's a crime a book. And apart from the time travel, there are no mystical elements, it's just one awful man doing awful, awful things. As revolting as he was, the murderer was probably the most interesting character, because Kirby and Dan felt like tired stereotypes. I didn't like anyone in this book, everyone was damaged and uninviting. I think I felt a lot of revulsion and pity while reading this book. One of the other reviews commented that the other Shining Girls were more interesting, and I'm inclined to agree. Margot was fascinating, for the half chapter we got to spend with her.The worst thing about this book was the feeling of there being no point to my reading it. I persevered because I wanted to know if there was some twist. Some revelation. Something to pull it all together and make me go "Oh yes! I see! How poetic! How incredible!". Something to explain what time travel had to do with anything in this crime novel. But...there wasn't. It was brutal, gory, and a harrowing read, but at the end of it, I didn't get any emotional pay off. There was no reward, or resolution, or anything that justified the emotional energy that this book took from me. I was just glad it was over.As a crime novel, it's most likely what the fans of the genre expect. For anyone else, I'd recommend caution. It's an intense read for a not-very-satisfying (or even interesting) resolution at the end.

I wish I liked this book more than I did. For a book about a time-traveling serial killer I really appreciated the author's efforts to ground the events in historical accuracy. Having read the interview in the back of the book I also believe her desire to make the victims of the killer into fully realized characters was a noticeable success.Too much of a success. I found myself getting caught up in the back stories of the victims and enjoying them way more then the major plot. Every time a cool new character is introduced she is gruesomely killed. I feel like, backstory or not, Beukes is still giving the people what they want: extreme depictions of violence against women. Can it really be an empowering exercise if at the end of the day she's still ending her book with a big ol' lady-body count?In fact, I feel like she defeats her own purpose in other ways as well because the POV of the book is so detached and the reader is forced to spend so much time with the super gross killer (even while he's doing mundane stuff) that I felt myself become a little numb to the horror of it all.Ultimately, I came away from this book feeling like good research and interesting ideas didn't fully bring this all together in a satisfying way. I do think it's worth reading, if only for the interesting female characters that Beukes creates but, if you are anything like me, you will probably come away wishing they had been the focus instead of the cannon fodder.

Each major bond issue by Milken's firm is a case study unto itself. The book is lengthy (it took me months to finish, picking it up several times only to realize I did not have the appropriate time to devote to its completion) but that is the result of the author's attention to multifold details that assemble a rich tapestry telling the story of the major injection of capital into the American economy in the 1980s (aside from mortgage-backed securities).

The subject matter is fascinating, (Michael Milken),yet the author's continuous use of sophisticated vocabulary made the constant look up of definitions on the Kindle annoying. It reduced the ability to stay with the continuity of the story, which is complex, given how many examples of deals, companies, and related individuals were covered. Den of Thieves tells the story with all players involved in such an enjoyably readable way that you can't put it down.

Excellent recount of the events, enjoyable, a little drawn out.Milken was amazing what a brain what drive. Would have liked to have studied at at Wharton or under Milken

I didn't realize that this book was as old as it is. I was hoping for a more up-to-date history of the Drexel story. The book is very well researched, but due to its very nature, there are quotes taken from numerous "sources" that are un-named.

Good storytelling and faster-paced than Den of Thieves, which has a different focus (insider trading as opposed to Milken’s money machine) and has more specific details of certain elements of the story.

Very well written. Very engaging. It was a fun read. As good a read as Den of Thieves. Very enjoyable.

Good read. If you're interested in the 80's and learning more about the players that took over companies using junk bonds in those days.

As someone who has lived in Chicago for over ten years now I find this book to be a great guide to finding things that I might not have already known about. There are a number of things in here that are fairly well known, but there are also a lot that I'd never heard of and that have been fun to check out. I'm a stay at home dad with a 2 year old and we've been on several little mini adventures already using the book as a guide. Not really something I'd recommend to people visiting Chicago for a brief vacation but ideal for more long term "tourists."

The first thing I always look for in a travel book is quality photography, and this one nails it! Ms. Inverso brings Chicago to life with her photos. I hope I can see Chicago the way she does!

She uniquely deals with issues of self-worth, self-sabotage and working in community with stories, humor and powerful tools. The creative formula is a well written, incredibly useful and easy to follow formula for discovering what you are meant to create, creating it and releasing it into the world. The author does a wonderful job of making this process easy and understandable while allowing yourself to be gentle and forgiving with yourself in the process. She also truly has a knack for using metaphor and storytelling to make the material accessible for all learning styles as well as leading by example and through honest vulnerability.As a coach, dancer and teacher of movement, I found many wonderful nuggets of wisdom that I will use in my creative process for the rest of my life. She includes an array of great self-evaluation surveys and exercises for all stages of the process and shows you how to apply them to your art form whether that be dance, music, writing, acting, fine art or any other creative endeavor. I’ll sharing it with my collaborators and students so they too can get the benefits The Creative Formula has to offer.

This said, I am enjoying it and savoring each page which compelled me to write a short review, now. first, I am loving the "Pie" analogy. As a creative, photographer and painter, I am being inspired to move above and beyond how I look at my process. Step One: Planting the Seed, starts of with the concept of Alignment. Understanding where I may hold myself back from creating the image I want has been eye opening Having the desire, I see how self-criticism plays a role in dragging me down and has blocked me from aligning with my desire...Sheesh! Even after only reading up through the first 30 pages,I look forward to finishing this over the weekend as I sit in paradise.Holly Shaw writes this book both as if she is boldly talking to a creative friend and as an expert in her field. I don't see 5 stars changing, but I can't wait to share more concrete examples where I have put some of this juicy information of The Creative Formula into action..

Good book in good condition

Wonderful, colorful, vintage ads from the classic age of railroads, back when ads were actually art. Any railfan would love this book.

A wonderful soft back book of posters designed for instant nostalgia. I rather liked its comprehensiveness, mainly featuring US railroads but nicely chapters devoted to Canadian and European posters. Another nice touch is the inclusion of ads, baggage labels and several black and white photos.Predictably the posters tend to feature the streamline diesels of the thirties and forties (certainly a lot easier for the illustrators) rather than the European style of picturing the destinations. The travelling experience was the selling point rather than getting somewhere quickly and this, by the late forties and fifties, was rather a lost cause as plane travel was slowly becoming commonplace. There is great 1958 photo of the General Motors Aerotrain on page fifty-four making a PR stop in San Diego, possibly the last true streamliner.Most of the posters shown have a graphic rather than literal style though there is a stunning 1940 Santa Fe brochure cover that has an E8 somewhere west of the Rockies done in a very photo realist style. The last chapter Rails for Victory covers the WW2 years when railroads lost no opportunity in telling everyone they were doing their bit. There are couple of beautiful Dean Cornwell paintings used as calendar art by the Pennsylvania RR in 1943 and 44.The European chapter has some excellent British posters issued before the railroads were taken over by the state in 1947. If these take your fancy have a look at Railway Posters 1923-1947: From the Collection of the National Railway Museum, York a gorgeous book of over two hundred posters and quite remarkable because of the range of artistic styles that were used just to push train travel.All Aboard is an easy-on-the-eye quick tour of rail posters. A more detailed look can be found in Travel by Train: The American Railroad Poster, 1870-1950 with plenty of super graphic material.***FOR AN INSIDE LOOK click 'customer images' under the cover.

This book covers railroad advertising from the early 1900s to the late 50s. All color art and a few B&W pictures showing the real trains that influenced the advertising. It shows examples of railroad advertising from posters, timetables, brochures and luggage tags as well as railroads in the US, Canada and Europe. There is a breif history introducing each chapter and the captions for each picture are descriptive and accurate. At the end of the book, there are a few pages explaining how to collect railroad art, which I found very informative. An easy read and very entertaining. An excellent coffee-table book.

As always, Chronicle Books beautiful graphic series has captured a wonderful look back at riding the rails. Johnson and O'Leary have compiled a romantic collection of railroad commercial art.

What a great little (size) book! Packed full of really good imagery and commentary, anyone interested in the subject will enjoy this gem
