I planned the trip to Egypt with the thought that this could be my only opportunity of seeing the country. Picked up several guides and showroomed many other Egypt travel books as well. At the time I bought this used OOP book I didn't have much expectations for it since it was written over 20 years ago. I tried reading it ahead of time but didn't get too into it as its detail oriented writing required more concentration than I was willing to give it.After my first day on a private tour in Cairo to see a few noteworthy Mosques, I found myself in the hotel room starting to really get into the book to see what the next day's itinerary had to offer. We were flying to Aswan to begin our Nile cruise to Luxor. I read up on the temples and their tremendous backstories. Upon arriving at Philae the next day I began to ask the Egyptologist questions that threw him off his normal routine of speeches. I could tell that most the visitors have done no homework beforehand and receive the only the introduction speeches only. After the previous night's read I was curious about the larger back story of Philae as the last standing working temple in the Ancient Egyptian empire. The conversation went from rout to stimulating immediately. The Egyptologist became alive with responses and information that forced him out of his typical conversation pieces. This book had us pulling over at a "worthless" temple because I wanted to see the ruins that inspired a poem from the romantic era of British literature. Its those kind of easter eggs of information that really flushes out the whole experience. This book took our Egyptian vacation to the next level. It exposed the modern tour guides I brought for what they are; superficial in capacity. I was so impressed that I purchased the rest of the guide books within the series. I plan on heading to Jerusalem (and Jordan) and that book appears to offer more of the same as their Egypt treatise.Personal regrets concerning our vacation. I would have added an extra 3 days to do the cruise of Lake Nasser as well to see Abu Simbel . Its a great reason to return someday. Maybe head towards Khartoum afterwards... Also it would be nice to see what the new Cairo museum looks like when it is finally completed.

'I'm going to Egypt and I used this book to plan my visit, it is hand down the best guide book out there for Egypt. Even if you are not planning a trip to Egypt, this book has a lot of interesting information in it. The author has an interesting theory that the ancient Egyptian built their building as frozen music, of music in stone. He cites this one example of a pair obelisk at this temple in Karnak, one obelisk is still standing while the other obelisk is broken and laying beside. He states if you put you ear on the fallen obelisk and smack it with an open hand, you'll hear the humming sound of a tuning fork. When I get to that temple 'I'm going to test his theory for myself

I went to Egypt with JAW and unfortunately lost my copy. Even though it is expensive now, I am so glad I got another copy. The info is simply fascinating and lively as his talks were. Only minus: the print is sooooooo small--hard on these 60-year old eyes.

Hands down by far the best book on Egypt! A must have if your going to Egypt.

This is like having the legendary John Anthony West by your side as you explore Egypt.

When I first went to Egypt over fifteen years ago, I had with me only conventional and academic guides to that beautiful and wonderful place. I purchased this one to supplement my itinerary for the next journey to that sacred land.

I am very happy with this book. I will be visiting Egypt soon and this book is helping me to decide which places to visit first. I am certain I will use this book as a reference for all of my future trips to Egypt.

If you are able to visit Egypt read this book first.
