“Little Boy Lost” was a great idea for a story, though it would be hard to place it under the thriller label. I felt the book properly belonged in the legal/mystery genre. As such, author J. D. Trafford has presented an excellent tale, injecting it with enough procedural items to keep it interesting without overloading the reader. The main character, Justin, has a lot on his plate. He runs a struggling law practice, is a widower, has a daughter who is having problems with other children at her school, and he is dissatisfied with the justice system. He also has family pressures and still thinks about the demons that tried to possess him after his wife passed away. The author has successfully introduced a complex character who many people will probably be able to identify with. The story had me hooked, and I was waiting to see who was abducting all the missing children. Unfortunately, the ending was not satisfactory. Anytime an author is going to brand a character as a killer, I want to see reasonable justification for why the killer did what he did…that didn’t happen with this story, and a book that could have been powerful all the way through flatlined at the end. I hesitate to say more without injecting spoilers. As previously stated, I believe the author has talent and his writing style is smooth and effective. The only issues I had with the book was that the “thriller” label did not describe the thinly veiled discussions on racism and class warfare. At times, it appears that this was the agenda and a story was written around it. Mr. Trafford can certainly write on whatever side topic he chooses. I purposely try to stay away from political books because no matter what side of the political aisle the author sits on, the presentation usually is heavily slanted. If one is going to address a volatile issue such as racism, it serves no purpose to only stand on one side of the issue. Only calm examination of the problem from all sides will enable solutions to the challenges to emerge. I removed no stars for the author’s choice to write about the issue as he did, just as I don’t remove stars for vulgarities (which there are near the beginning, though they virtually disappear after a few appearances). I do inform readers what is present in the book and allow them to make their own choices on what they prefer to read.Overall, a good effort by J. D. Trafford. The writing is excellent, and though I was dissatisfied with the ending, the procedural aspects were interesting and the plot throughout most of the book moved at a decent pace. Four stars.

I actually started reading this book over a long weekend, and I finished it in a day and a half. The book starts of pretty steady and picks up momentum and doesn't slow down. The main Character is smart but has been thrown some blows in life so his confidence is a little down until he starts trying to solve the mystery of the lost boys. The book kept me intrigued until chapter 65, when I was able to put some pieces together. I would definitely recommend this book.

I love a food mystery/lawyer book, but there seem to be so few that are really entertaining. J.D. has a gift for spinning a good tale. He takes us to a place, a neighborhood, a city, and develops believable characters there. The plot is intriguing yet thoroughly believable. Amazingly there seems to be almost no need for gratuitous sex or violence.Usually I dislike reading other mystery/detective/lawyer books by the same author because I'm not seeing much of anything new. I'm betting that this author is the exception. Perhaps he'll be the exception, like John Grisham, always opening new doors...

It’s the story of Justin Glass, an African American lawyer in St. Louis. The book begins when Glass, struggling to maintain a small practice, agrees to look into the disappearance of a troubled youth, Devon Walker,15. His sister, Tanisha, only eight, asks Glass to help, offering to pay with coins and a few dollars collected in a pickle jar, maybe ten dollars. Tanisha's concern for her brother is touching. There follows a story that is very strong up to about the 95 percent mark on my Kindle. Great St. Louis atmosphere. Trafford knows the city. St. Louis is a city in decline, with disabling crime and social conflict.Glass seems to be a living oxymoron: an honest lawyer. His intentions are good. He comes from a politically prominent family; his father is a senior U.S. Congressman and his brother is a Missouri state senator.Glass’s search leads to a series of murders. The victims include Devon. It seems someone is targeting young African Americans who have a long criminal record. But as the conclusion approached things got a little rushed. If author J.D.Trafford had maintained his starting strength I could label this one of the best books I have read. As is, it’s well worth your time.

This book well highlighted a problem that is not only in St. Louis but throughout the country - boys (and girls, I'm sure) lost in our judicial systems, in our foster programs, in our communities. When chubby-faced smiling children turn into surly dead-eyed teens, we can look to our society as well as to the individuals as the cause. That said, the book is not preachy, the main character, Justin Glass, is not perfect and is even fragile after the death of his wife. He is a neighborhood lawyer barely making ends meet after a near breakdown. His family is prominent, of mixed race, and politically connected for generations. The story also portrays the blight in cities and the fact that little is being done to reenergize neighborhoods. While this sounds pretty depressing, the story moves along well, and the characters who are hopeful of change lighten the mood. I'm glad I read this book, and I will watch for further novels by this author.
