This book made my job so much easier! We are implementing three new software applications: Tableau, Webi, and Alteryx. These books have been enormously helpful in figuring out what the lessons and job aids should be for new users. This book is easy to understand and I can use the practice files to set up the lessons and figure out content and then use my company's data sources for the actual course materials. This book has been a lifesaver on a project with a short timeline. My only complaint is that entirely too much space is spent on how Tableau works with lots of explanation. Frankly my dear, my users don't give a hoot. They don't want to know what it is and how it works. They want to know how to use it. So it could use a lot less on technical explanation and a lot more "cookbook".

So far the content is good, but I would have thought twice about spending $50 on this book had I known that all of the examples, graphs and charts, were in grayscale. It really makes it hard to see the visualizations they way they are intended to look, especially because when using Tableau, so much depends on color. It forces you to look extra hard at the pages and the different shading of gray.Disappointed.

The content of this book will get you started with Tableau and it's updated for 10. The sample code works well too. Definitely worth buying.Just a fair warning, the editing is atrocious. "The preceding example couldmight have been solved ...". There are quite a few example where things should have been formatted differently, especially with italics. The book also doesn't specify, which examples go with which sheets after the first or second chapter.I'd still buy the book to learn Tableau as the author does a good job explaining everything, but I'm not very impressed with the publisher. This seems to be a common problem with Packt books in other reviews too, but there aren't a lot of current book options for Tableau 10, which is what they're probably relying on.

The changes in Tableau's version 10 were not exactly throw-out-your-Tableau-9-books-radical, so a relevant question for many potential buyers would be "Should I go for the second edition, or settle for the first one?" (Paper and Kindle versions of the second edition cost $52 and $40, respectively; you can have a copy of the first for $30 or $31). I did not see the answer in the two available reviews - both from the book's editorial reviewers, one of them the author's coworker; what a cozy company - and decided to find out for myself, ordering the two editions and putting them side by side. ("Hello again" in the case of "Learning Tableau" version 1.0, which was part of my Tableau-book round-up - see my other reviews - when I started out with Tableau a year ago).My findings? The first one is that the second edition is a good third thicker than the first - you get about 100 pages more. However, when you look closer, you find that most (60-70%, I would guess) of the increase comes from wider spacing - often to give the text more structure, e.g. to put a paragraph into a "Tips" box - and bigger, Tableau-10-look screenshots. The chapter list is the same, except for small changes in two chapters' names. I spotted about 30 pages of new material - these are the sparse Packt pages, mind you - with the most notable addition coming in Chapter 10, with quick coverage of six "non-off-the-shelf" charts. (Slope, lollipop, dumbbell, Mekko, waterfall, symbol). There are a few pages on the new clustering feature; a useful example using a cross-database join; another, similar data-manipulation exercise ("data densification" - ouch) - these are all the additions that come to mind.If I had to come up with a number, I would say that second edition adds 15% to the first one. I see an incremental improvement in what already was a sound book, and that's a good thing. Is "Learning Tableau" a must for beginners and advanced Tableau users alike, as the five-star reviews proclaim? Not really. There is nothing advanced here, period. Intermediate users will appreciate 20-plus pages, but with half of that material easily googlable - type "tableau slope chart" into the search box, and off you go - buying a book just for that would be silly. The PDF of Tableau Desktop Help would be a much better read, take my word for it. (Actually, it is reading that doc that has diminished my appreciation of "Learning Tableau" since a year ago).Beginners alone can benefit from "Learning Tableau" - is it a good choice for them? I doubt it. Yes, "Learning Tableau" is a substantial, quality book - but, unless you are friends with the author, you want to acknowledge and compare the alternatives, and that comparison, in my view, is not favorable to "Learning Tableau".Going from the more "beginner'y" to the more "intermediate'y": "Communicating Data with Tableau", "Tableau for Dummies", "Tableau for Healthcare" (ignore the healthcare bit) and "Tableau 9: The Official Guide" are all good choices worth checking out. Each one is nicely printed in color - contrast to the bargain-basement typesetting and black-and-white illustrations here.My unsolicited advice to Joshua Milligan would be to try and write a properly intermediate Tableau book, a cookbook of the type that Stephen Redmond has been doing for QlikView.

This book covers a wide range of topics, both basic and advanced. Because it's so broad, it does a good job of giving overviews with relevant examples, but it doesn't go into much depth. I also found the chapter order to be a bit disconcerting; I'm used to cleaning data being near the front of the book; instead, it was near the end. The biggest drawback I found was the book spent very little time on drill-downs, which, to me, is one of the most powerful aspects of Tableau.

Learning on the job just wasn't cutting it at all as everyone here seems to fumble thru development. I felt much more confident after reading chapter 1.

Very good information in this book. Well written. Assumes some experience with computers and programming.

I made a research before getting this book, excellent option to have it in Kindle
