For some reason, when I picked up David Rensin’s The Mailroom: Hollywood History from the Bottom up, I just expected it to be a book-length exhortation for the chronically un-motivated. It may have had elements of that, but it was so much more. The book focuses on the William Morris Agency’s widely imitated sink-or-swim mail-room training program for agents. For Hollywood buffs, it is a history of Hollywood (and to a lesser extent, show-business New York), not only from the “bottom up,” as billed, but from the inside out. Life lessons abound with hilarious (and sad) stories of savvy cutthroats (the mailroom boy who edges a long-serving agent’s secretary out of her job), screw-ups and hyperventilating basket cases who washed out. The special challenges faced by women and minorities in the program are sensitively addressed (with insights from one-time trainee-secretary Helen Gurley Brown, among others). The role of nepotism and connections in unmistakable (e.g., George Burns’ nephew), but interestingly it emerges that sometimes the nepotism worked out in spite of everything (George Burns’ conscientious nephew). and at other times resulted with the agency being stuck with lazy, entitled incompetents (Doris Day’s son). Dirty little secrets emerge, such as why WMA and other agencies started requiring college degrees (to avoid hiring minority applicants) in a business where street smarts, cunning, ruthlessness and what might be called “emotional intelligence” were and still are infinitely far more important than traditional “book smarts.” Hilarious tales of adolescent and 20-something males walking in on naked or scantily clad actresses) and pranks (e.g. letters with forged signatures from top agents, hired call girls posing as reporters, and even gluing Doris Day’s son, Terry Melcher’s shoes to the floor, since apparently he couldn’t be bothered to wear them) alternate with insight into the world of show-business agents and the entertainment industry in general. The most important life lessons I took away were (1) that if you want to succeed in any endeavor,. you must be willing to start at rock-bottom, however much humiliation and grunt work that inevitably entails; formal education and superficially impressive-sounding academic degrees are no substitute for grit, determination and what Rensin would term “intestinal fortitude”; and (2) oh yes, in the world of Hollywood agencies, as in most other areas of life, a-holes almost always finish first!

What made Ivy League educated young people want to slave in the mail room for ungodly hours for barely sustainable wages, be screamed at constantly, cater to the whims of some very eccentric people, make deliveries in all hours of the day and sometimes night, run demeaning errands and in their spare time, read and "cover" scripts for the powers that be? Well, for the chance to be entertainment agents, to make piles of money and hobnob with the stars. This is the story as told by the successful ones like David Geffin and Mike Orvitz about what it took and really why you had to start there. It was a postgraduate course in how to be a winner in Hollywood and New York. The book covers it all from the early days to post 2000 with entertaining vignettes based on many many interviews. This seems to have been a labor of love by the author and it shows. You will laugh at some of the antics and learn some great tips about how to get ahead in this industry and perhaps anywhere.

I love entertainment business books and this one does not disappoint. Unless you're in the biz, which I'm not, almost all of the names will be unfamiliar. This book has no story. It's a known fact that a way into the entertainment industry is to work in an agency's mailroom, eat sh*t, and hope for your break. This book is a series of interviews with the former mailroom attendees on the good, the bad, and the mental make-up of the wannabes struggling to get out of "mailroom jail". It's funny, informative, and one of those books you can't put down. Many industries have a proving ground. In investment banking we put them on as a trading or sales assistant hoping they will pick up the lingo and learn on the fly. But the agency mailroom seems to be about feeding egos of senior agent's with much more screaming, yelling and attention paid to personal chores. They do mention many of the nice agents as well as the agents who were best at teaching the mailroom guys. My favorite stories are about CAA because it is next door to my favorite hotel the Peninsula and because of the Mike Ovitz aura. Mike doesn't come off particularly well in the book but partner Ron Meyer does come off as a particularly sharp and nice guy.The positives and negatives of the mailroom run from taking your bosses stool sample in the doctor to having nude actresses answer the door. I also enjoyed the stories of the CAA mailroom which had a particularly high level of paranoia. I had met media mogul and former agent, Mike Medavoy so it was interesting seeing his son's quotes who was eventually fired due to information leaked to his father. If you have any interest in the business side of Hollywood, you'll like this book. Other books of interest would be "Wannabe" about an MBA's attempt to succeed at the low levels of Hollywood, and Lynda Obst's book "Hello, He Lied" about her journey from journalist to producer.

Good history book about days long gone. I wasn't in the scene, but good to get a sense of how old Hollywood worked. The stories of mail room workers delivering large checks to the stars, and being encouraged to listen in on all calls was interesting.

At first I wasn't impressed. This is just a bunch of name dropping, I thought. But as I got into it I came to love the stories, the variety of personalities, and the life lessons.

It becomes very repetitive. What a horrible world to live in. Interesting, nonetheless. I bought it used and got a nice copy of a hardback which I gave away after reading.

From the real men and women who started at the bottom and made it to the top and beyond. There is some backstabbing as they all aspire for the same jobs but also the camaraderie of everyone being in the bottom of the barrel trying to get out as fast as possible. Some make it and some don't. A must-read for anyone contemplating becoming a Hollywood agent.

Even if you are not a writer and don't plan to write medical materials, reading this book will make the problems with literacy in the health field abundantly clear. Anyone who is a patient, or works with patients, will learn a good deal about what they can do to make signs in waiting rooms, brochures on the wall rack, or a doctor's written instructions easier for everyone to understand. As the title claims--extremely practical and useful book.

In today's world, mindsets have changed from working a 9 to 5 desk job to a more flexible form of income. Passivity and having multiple forms of income are essential in living a life of financial freedom. The author does a great job at illustrating different passive income ideas and how you can execute them successfully. If you are looking to make passive income and potentially quit your day job, give this a shot.

This book focused on 4 passive income models giving a lot of suggestions to help each grow. Repeatedly it is mentioned to do more research before beginning as that will increase your skill and ensure legality with your endeavors.

Great little book to start your entrepreneurship. I dont want to give away too much, but the book gives you enough idea to start yourself on the path of passive income. All the platforms mentioned are proven and tested. I can say that because I myself is doing some of them.

awesome book about passive income. gives you various ways to build passive income in a beginners friendly way, no bulls*** wishful thinking guide just straightto the point with methods that have been proven to work

Everyone wants to make money online, but there are so many options that most people just end up confused. "Passive Income" cuts through all of the fluff and outlines four of the best models for starting an online business, presenting the material in a straightforward manner that helps you choose the right direction for you. This is not a big book, but it does a great job of covering the basic information you need to pick your model and start moving forward.

It's a little discouraging and very Amazon-centric. What it does do, is encourage more research.

A great introduction to four different passive income streams. I learned about one new one and about some business research tools I haven't come across before.

I guess this would be good for others just not what I was looking for.

This book is easy to understand and I can use the practice files to set up the lessons and figure out content and then use my company's data sources for the actual course materials. This book has been a lifesaver on a project with a short timeline. My only complaint is that entirely too much space is spent on how Tableau works with lots of explanation. Frankly my dear, my users don't give a hoot. They don't want to know what it is and how it works. They want to know how to use it. So it could use a lot less on technical explanation and a lot more "cookbook".

So far the content is good, but I would have thought twice about spending $50 on this book had I known that all of the examples, graphs and charts, were in grayscale. It really makes it hard to see the visualizations they way they are intended to look, especially because when using Tableau, so much depends on color. It forces you to look extra hard at the pages and the different shading of gray.Disappointed.

The content of this book will get you started with Tableau and it's updated for 10. The sample code works well too. Definitely worth buying.Just a fair warning, the editing is atrocious. "The preceding example couldmight have been solved ...". There are quite a few example where things should have been formatted differently, especially with italics. The book also doesn't specify, which examples go with which sheets after the first or second chapter.I'd still buy the book to learn Tableau as the author does a good job explaining everything, but I'm not very impressed with the publisher. This seems to be a common problem with Packt books in other reviews too, but there aren't a lot of current book options for Tableau 10, which is what they're probably relying on.

The changes in Tableau's version 10 were not exactly throw-out-your-Tableau-9-books-radical, so a relevant question for many potential buyers would be "Should I go for the second edition, or settle for the first one?" (Paper and Kindle versions of the second edition cost $52 and $40, respectively; you can have a copy of the first for $30 or $31). I did not see the answer in the two available reviews - both from the book's editorial reviewers, one of them the author's coworker; what a cozy company - and decided to find out for myself, ordering the two editions and putting them side by side. ("Hello again" in the case of "Learning Tableau" version 1.0, which was part of my Tableau-book round-up - see my other reviews - when I started out with Tableau a year ago).My findings? The first one is that the second edition is a good third thicker than the first - you get about 100 pages more. However, when you look closer, you find that most (60-70%, I would guess) of the increase comes from wider spacing - often to give the text more structure, e.g. to put a paragraph into a "Tips" box - and bigger, Tableau-10-look screenshots. The chapter list is the same, except for small changes in two chapters' names. I spotted about 30 pages of new material - these are the sparse Packt pages, mind you - with the most notable addition coming in Chapter 10, with quick coverage of six "non-off-the-shelf" charts. (Slope, lollipop, dumbbell, Mekko, waterfall, symbol). There are a few pages on the new clustering feature; a useful example using a cross-database join; another, similar data-manipulation exercise ("data densification" - ouch) - these are all the additions that come to mind.If I had to come up with a number, I would say that second edition adds 15% to the first one. I see an incremental improvement in what already was a sound book, and that's a good thing. Is "Learning Tableau" a must for beginners and advanced Tableau users alike, as the five-star reviews proclaim? Not really. There is nothing advanced here, period. Intermediate users will appreciate 20-plus pages, but with half of that material easily googlable - type "tableau slope chart" into the search box, and off you go - buying a book just for that would be silly. The PDF of Tableau Desktop Help would be a much better read, take my word for it. (Actually, it is reading that doc that has diminished my appreciation of "Learning Tableau" since a year ago).Beginners alone can benefit from "Learning Tableau" - is it a good choice for them? I doubt it. Yes, "Learning Tableau" is a substantial, quality book - but, unless you are friends with the author, you want to acknowledge and compare the alternatives, and that comparison, in my view, is not favorable to "Learning Tableau".Going from the more "beginner'y" to the more "intermediate'y": "Communicating Data with Tableau", "Tableau for Dummies", "Tableau for Healthcare" (ignore the healthcare bit) and "Tableau 9: The Official Guide" are all good choices worth checking out. Each one is nicely printed in color - contrast to the bargain-basement typesetting and black-and-white illustrations here.My unsolicited advice to Joshua Milligan would be to try and write a properly intermediate Tableau book, a cookbook of the type that Stephen Redmond has been doing for QlikView.

This book covers a wide range of topics, both basic and advanced. Because it's so broad, it does a good job of giving overviews with relevant examples, but it doesn't go into much depth. I also found the chapter order to be a bit disconcerting; I'm used to cleaning data being near the front of the book; instead, it was near the end. The biggest drawback I found was the book spent very little time on drill-downs, which, to me, is one of the most powerful aspects of Tableau.

Learning on the job just wasn't cutting it at all as everyone here seems to fumble thru development. I felt much more confident after reading chapter 1.

Very good information in this book. Well written. Assumes some experience with computers and programming.

I made a research before getting this book, excellent option to have it in Kindle

I liked this collection of recipes, particularly as they included photos. What I enjoyed seeing was the different types of crusts used, from almond and coconut flour to eggs, cheese, protein powder, cauliflower, zucchini, and even psyllium.Lots of different varieties and easy to follow instructions. Wish these had macros listed though not a distractor, it'll be easy to calculate when I make them. The author must love pizza as much as I do!Created my own variation of ground chicken crust using a mini waffle maker. These all look creatively yummy, looking forward to making & eating them :)

Every word and image - even the book blurb! - is taken from a well known keto site and is subject to copyright.Nothing in this book was written by this author - the copyright notice at the beginning of the book is a joke.Avoid.

These recipes are spectacular and absolutely just what we have been searching for. I look forward to trying these in the very near future!

A must for sailors visiting Venezuela and Bonaire. New version is wire bound for easy use aboard. Well written and documented approaches to harbors and difficult anchorages. New version has been updated and corrected.

Really well written and organized. This book lives up to the great reputation that Chris Doyle has built. A great blend of sketch charts, color pictures of areas depicted in charts and good local information. I have not sailed there yet, but I feel this guide will make it much easier.

I have used excellent cruising guides by Chris Doyle while sailing in the eastern caribbean. This guide for Venezuela and Bonaire appears to be equally informative. The mini-charts are clear and provide enough guidance without being cluttered. The only reason I did not give the fifth start is that I have not used the guide in the waters for which it is written - perhaps next season.

During our sailing trip from Martinique to Venezuela we used this book especially because of the detailed and useful information about small harbours and beautyful beaches. I can recommend it very strongly.

Seems like the definitive readily available book for serious treatment of Norway's folktales. None of the dumb-it-down treacle that is so often pitched at kids, even includes notes re where the tale was collected, how common such tales are, etc. Not necessarily tales that will amuse your 4-year old, but an interesting window into what interested folk in earlier times. Highly recommended.

I had to buy this book for a college class. It was an okay book if you are super into folk tales it is definitely the one for you! I thought it was very interesting and it did have some good stories to read throughout the pages. Overall I would read it more in depth for another class but I would not read it just to read it.

I've owned a copy of this 1964 publication for quite a while; my paperback copy is of the 1973 third printing. It is a personal favorite among a shelf-full of folklore volumes. I no longer remember whether it was an impulse purchase, or I needed it for one or another undergraduate or graduate class, and if so whether it was in Scandinavian Literature, or Germanic Mythology, or Folklore Studies. And that should give you a clue that Amazon has used guesswork in rating it as suitable for 4 to 8 year olds. (Yes, I've reported / complained about it; maybe, against precedent, this will change soon.)Not that there aren't stories in here quite suitable for reading to young children; there are some. But the book is heavily weighted with historical and theoretical introductions, and elaborate notes to the stories, many of which are either aimed at adults, or chosen to illustrate traditional beliefs as much as to entertain. The volume was an early entry in the University of Chicago Press "Folktales of the World" series, well-produced volumes which featured forewords by the distinguished American folklorist Richard Dorson, and were generally edited by specialists from the nations covered. (It was officially number 5; but number 1, Kurt Ranke's "Folktales of Germany," did not actually appear until 1966!) Unfortunately, most other volumes in the series seem to be out of print; "Folktales of Ireland" (Sean O'Sullivan) may be the only other exception. The editor of this volume, Reidar Christiansen, an important Norwegian folklorist, drew on both earlier published collections and archival sources to illustrate a wide variety of genres of oral narrative in Norwegian tradition. He includes: Historical Legends (#1-#11, with sub-divisions); Legends About Magic and Witchcraft (#12-#20); Legends About Ghosts, the Human Soul, and Shapeshifting (#21-#23, again with sub-divisions); Legends About Spirits of the Sea, Lakes, and Rivers (#24-#30); Legends About Sprits of the Air (#31-#32); Legends About Spirits of Forest and Mountain (#33-#60); Legends About Household Spirits (#61-#66); and, finally, Fictional Folktales (#67-#82). The translation, by Pat Shaw Iversen, is, with some minor exceptions, extremely readable. Some pieces are anecdotes about supernatural beings, illuminating, but uninspiring if read in bulk for amusement. Some of the legends are extremely well told, and nicely localized in terms of Norwegian landscapes. The concluding portion is made up of first-rate wonder tales, mainly Norwegian variants of international fairy tales, told with unusual complexity and skill, which are closest to what the Amazon age rating would suggest. It is a rewarding book for adults, and probably for teenagers, and perhaps late pre-teens; anyone buying it for small children will not be so happy with it, with the exception of those comfortable with retelling the tales, or with drawing inspiration from them for your own. (Which is great, if you happen to be a small-scale Tolkien...!)Some Norwegian folktales, although rarely identified as such, are surprisingly well known. According to my own completely unscientific survey, those which are remembered and recognized by their origin tend to be a couple of anecdotes about Trolls, bridges, and Billy-Goats, which is a shame, given the actual variety and sophistication of the tradition. (Of course, some of the best may tend to be lumped in with their fairly close counterparts elsewhere.) Those who enjoy the present work may wish to turn elsewhere for more stories; the seriously curious will look for more examples of beliefs and legends.Unhappily, what one will generally find are either retellings or shorter selections, more or less obviously chosen for children, and often directly or indirectly based on existing translations; I will mention one partial exception below. The most nearly comparable collection with which I am familiar is an old George W. Dasent translation, drawn directly from a great nineteenth-century collection by P.C. Asbjornsen and Jorgen Moe, "Norske Folke Eventyr." (First edition 1843-44, expanded edition 1852; also given as *Folke-eventyr* and *Folkeeventyr.* My apologies for anglicizing the spelling of Norwegian names at this point, and most other places; I'm not going to trust that everyone else will read this in Unicode!)The Norwegian original is a long-established classic in its native country. Dasent's translation (1858; expanded 1859; third edition 1888) was known to, and cited by, Tolkien, under its original title of "Popular Tales from the Norse." It was available for decades in an illustrated version from Dover Publications, under the title "East o' the Sun & West o' the Moon: Fifty-nine Norwegian Folk Tales from the Collection of Peter Christen Asbjørnsen and Jørgen Moe, With 77 illustrations by Erik Werenskiold, Theodor Kittelsen and Others" (1970). The illustrations in the Dover edition -- taken from a 1936 three-volume edition of "Samlede Eventyr" [Collected Fairy Tales] -- varied from almost ethnographic (compare photographs in Janice S. Stewart's "The Folk Arts of Norway" [1953, 1972; third edition, 1999]), to whimsical, to weird, many displaying some combination of these traits. The strengths and weaknesses, and distinct character, of the Christiansen/Iversen volume can be illustrated by a brief comparison. The Victorian translation, stripped by Dover of some of its original (racist, and otherwise quite obsolete) introductory material, has many pieces not found in "Folktales of Norway," but there is overlap -- over a dozen instances. In some particulars, Dasent's translation is better than Iversen's renderings of the same passages. For example, in one story (#53a), Iversen has a white animal referred to in the title and in a critical moment as a "tabby," which, of course, implies a patterned coat, and in context makes no sense. In this case, Dasent had a more general colloquial term in the text, and a properly incorrect word in his story title. (Sorry to be opaque, but why spoil the tale -- which includes a species identification error beyond even Pepe LePew! -- for those who haven't read it?)Some differences may be in part due to variations in the underlying Norwegian texts (subjected to varying treatment since they were taken down in regional dialects), others to Iversen's attempts to provide completely new renderings. On the whole, Iversen's judgment seems sound. "The Red Knight" is much more intelligible a designation than Dasent's "Ritter Red," which, by incorporating an un-translated title (that looks like a loan-word from German), makes it sound like a personal name. The nineteenth-century collection is obviously weighted very heavily toward the (Norwegian) title category of "eventyr" -- essentially the familiar "fairy tales" of princesses and unlikely heroes, talking animals and magical helpers, known throughout the Old World. They are rendered in a style closer to Icelandic sagas than, say, to Perrault, or even the Grimms, and, although not treated in a strictly "scientific" manner by their collectors/editors, are utterly distinct from Hans Christian Andersen's contemporary inventions. Some of the stories translated by Dasent incidentally include distinctly Norwegian material, but this is comparatively scarce -- ironic, given Dasent's interest in England's supposed shared Nordic heritage and the genius of the "Germanic race." The contents are mainly variants of widely distributed tale-types. It is in part for the localized legends and specifically Norwegian versions of the supernatural (which Asbjornsen, among others, had published separately) that ""Folktales of Norway" is so valuable.Iversen's more modern English *might* make stories in the final section easier for some readers. On the whole, Dasent's translation, although a bit old-fashioned, does lend itself to reading to children -- if the adult is familiar with the story first, and exercises a little judgment. (Dasent warned against some items, especially two he moved to the end when re-ordering the collection; he also seems to have omitted at least one tale. My list of possible problems would be completely different.) More advanced young readers, with appetites sharpened by, for example, Tolkien, Lewis, Lloyd Alexander, or Rowling, might want to tackle it for themselves -- which I would consider less likely, although hardly impossible, with "Folktales of Norway."Unhappily, the 400-plus page Dover edition, with its wonderful Norwegian illustrations, has been supplanted by a less expensive, but much less satisfactory, short selection ("Thrift Edition"), under the same main title, in the Dover catalogue. The full version can still be found on Amazon, at this writing, with a little searching; it is, and should continue to be, available used. But the hardcover edition to which Amazon currently has it linked is one of the more dramatically abridged modern editions (a new illustrated version of what looks like one story!). If it were not for the possibility of confusion among these different books, I might have urged ordering both Dasent and Christiansen -- but then, I'm used to thinking of the 1970s prices of the copies in front of me! -- or suggesting them both to your local library. As it is, the next best alternative to the Dasent translation currently (and unambiguously) in print is the much shorter (192 pages) "Norwegian Folktales" in The Pantheon Fairy Tale and Folklore Library (1982), thirty-five tales selected from the work of Asbjornsen and Moe, edited by Iversen (again) and Carl Norman. This also includes illustrations by Werenskiold and Kittelsen: the introduction is on "The Norwegian Folk Tales and Their Illustrators." As previously suggested, it is at least packaged as suitable for children; for what it is worth, Amazon rates it for ages 9-12. I am perhaps too severe a judge of its merits; my choice of stories for re-translation would have been rather different, and I have sometimes wondered if some tales were selected over others because of more attractive illustrations available for them.(Speaking of illustrations again, I have long tried to ignore the pseudo-Viking stereotypes on the cover of "Folktales of Norway" -- accepting the art was an unusually bad decision by the University of Chicago Press.)Those with an informed interest in traditional oral literatures will certainly want to know "Folktales of Norway," and at least for now it seems to be quite readily available.

Skip Ibsen. The high point of Norwegian litterature is Asbjørnsen and Moe's folk tales. Just like American litterature started with Mark Twant, truly Norwegian litterature started with Asbjørnsen and Moe, and it is thanks to them we have what other peoples lack, a popular manner of speech that does not lack dignity. And if you want to get acquainted with the Norwegian way of thinking in the nineteenth century and earlier, Asbjørnsen and Moe is the closest thing we have to a poll.Ferdinand Linthoe Næshagen.
